iPhone Giveaways Cropping Up in Asia

Posted September 25, 07 5:00 AM by Gregory Ng

Well the iPhone hasn’t officially hit Europe yet and there hasn’t been any Asia release announcement, but people seem to be getting restless anyway. In fact, in the China Construction Bank in Hong Kong they are offering applicants for their loan service a chance to win an iPhone. It is no surprise that iPhones are being used to lure customers or upsell business: we see it all over the place in the United States. But it might be jumping the gun a bit to be offering a chance to win in Hong Kong. No word on when the promotion pays out.

Hmm, maybe they are giving away an unlocked iPhone…

Incredibly Close Up Pictures With an iPhone

How do you think this close up picture of cigarettes was taken? Macro lens? What would you say if I told you that it was from the 2 Megapixel icamera on the iPhone?

Believe it or not, these pictures were taken with the iPhone camera looking through the lens of a microscope. I found this set on Flickr. According to the copy listed in the Flickr Group,

Since the iPhone camera lens is flush mounted to the perfectly flat back of the device, it’s easy to have the camera peer into any kind of magnifier or microscope. The possibilities are endless for mobile microscopy.

Pretty cool. There are currently about 30 members to the group.

No One Noticed The Minor iPod Touch/iPhone Differences?

I cannot believe how many of you have yet to notice that the iPod Touch is in fact the future iPhone update in disguise.

A few things that I had noticed upon the iPod Touch’s much awaited arrival was the Dock. I’ll forgo the obvious Hardware related iPhone specs but if you’ll look at the Dock, it’s clear Apple wants to update it to reflect that Leopard finish, just really dark and making it very hard to see.

Next up, the Icons. Obviously the iTunes icon will appear on the iPhone via Software update but the Calculator icon is brown instead of gray. Now one more tidbit: Version 1.1 on a new product so soon? Perhaps, just maybe the iPhone and iPod Touch OS are identical?

Unlocking iPhone Goes Boom!

Posted August 31, 07 3:00 AM by Gregory Ng

imageI think it is safe to say even a Genius at the Genius Bar can’t help this one. Here’s a sad story about a guy who tried to unlock his iPhone, got through all the software steps and then poof, it went up in smoke…literally.

“We were so happy, all the software part was done, so we started opening the iphone. The antenna cover was a bit tricky but eventually it came off. Then we started to open the metal cover (after taking out the 3 screws) and PUFF, up it went in smoke, I think my collegue must have touched something. It literally went up in black smoke. I was so hot that when I tried to pick it up I burnt my fingers. So, this is for sure the most difficult part of the whole process. I don’t know what he did, as I had just stepped out of the room to fetch something when I heard a scream…they got such a fright.”

Posted in the Hackintosh user forums, one member, Cyberface had some advice:

Seriously though… any high-power lithium battery powered device can catch fire if shorted… more...

Upload Your iPhone Pictures to Facebook

AlwaysBeta are introducing a new online service that will enable you to upload the pictures off of your iPhone onto Facebook.

PxPipe, is the name of the service and it allows you to upload those pictures via email. The service works exactly as claimed. Just go to the website, create an account, and email photos to a unique email address that links to your facebook account. The pictures will be automatically queued up in your Facebook account when you log in. It is pretty simple and saves me a lot of time of uploading pictures to Facebook the other way.

Hide your Eyes: Man Smashes iPhone in Recliner

imageSome things are better unseen. The unintentional destruction of your iPhone is one of them. But atleast this guy’s smashed phone will not be for nought. Hopefully, you can take the same lesson as I did after seeing the horrific pictures: when your recliner does not budge, check you rpocket for your iPhone before you slam it closed.

At the end of the movie, I had a little trouble pushing in the footrest. However, after a few increasingly enthusiastic shoves, I was able to snap the footrest back into place. After a few minutes, I noticed my iPhone was missing.

Ouch! Remember when everyone (including me) was afraid the iPhone would be too slippery? Well, it may not be too slippery for your hands but it certainly may be for your pant pockets. Double check them before you jam in the footrest!

The Lego iPhone

It was inevitable. Someone was going to make a Lego iPhone. Well, the wait is over. Brick layer “ChieuKeung” has made his plastic iPhone and in this amateur Lego builder’s opinion, it’s pretty darn good. I especially like the Apple logo and the “home” button. Click here for the full gallery.

What iLife ‘08 Means for iPhone Owners

Posted August 8, 07 3:00 AM by Gregory Ng

imageApple announced the details of their new iLife suite of applications today. iLife 08 makes considerable improvements from past versions on all of the applications including iPhoto, iDVD, and iWeb. But it also means enhanced features for iPhone users.

Of course the export video to iPod feature in iMovie applies to the iPhone as well, but the most exciting news comes out of the iPhoto application. By pressing the “Send to Web Gallery” button on your iPhone, the picture will automatically get emailed via a special address and publish in a gallery in your .mac page.

What I would really like to see is the ability to take a picture on my iPhone, click a button and it gets sent to multiple other iPhones. With further updates constantly pointing to greater integration with these iLife updates, my dream could come true soon.

iLife 08 is available right now and retails for $79.

Under the hood of the iPhone

imageFor my first blog posting, what better way to start than with an article from Tech Republic explaining how to crack open the iPhone! Along with this article shows some really cool, descriptive pictures. An article like this would be especially helpful to those who want to replace the battery at some point or maybe even hack it to use their own carrier’s SIM card. It’s amazing how really small everything is, much like the iPod. This is definitely not for the faint of heart. Proceed with caution. A really interesting read for anyone who’s adventurous, or just wants to see the insides of the iPhone! To check out the article, go here.

Irony: iPhone Displays Run Windows

Posted August 2, 07 10:00 AM by Tanner Godarzi
Categories: Advertising AT&T Pictures Humor

Gizmodo has an interesting little tidbit. Those displays you see at AT&T stores where the iPhone is sold run on Windows, XP to be specific.

image

Keep in mind however these displays are specific to AT&T stores and the company may have thought a low end PC would be far better than a Mac for running an endless loop. What is interesting though, at the Apple Stores I have been to, I’ve seen the displays run off Mac Pros.
