O2 Worried About Customers Returning Newly Bought iPhones

Posted October 2, 09 4:00 AM by Tanner Godarzi
Categories: Competition

image The iPhone is available in a number of countries but since its international conquest following the 3G’s launch, only one carrier per country (or countries) had full exclusivity of the iPhone like AT&T does in the US. While competition amongst various carriers is a good things, it may be bad for British carrier O2, the first to carry the iPhone in the UK.

Up until last week, O2 was the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in England but Orange and Vodafone have stepped in to the arena and are offering iPhones to their customers starting November and sometime next year respectively. This new competition naturally would have any carrier worried but O2 faces losing up to 30,000 subscribers as they cancel their contracts within the allotted 2 weeks they have after buying their iPhone, a sort of test run on the network for customers. While it’s not expected O2 will lose that many subscribers, it seems possible that at least a few will jump ship to wait for the deals Orange and Vodafone will offer for the iPhone.

Steven Hartley and analyst at technology research house Ovum best summarizes the situation:

New Bell Canada Ad For Palm Pre Flatters Apple’s Advertising Department

Posted August 21, 09 10:00 AM by Tanner Godarzi

Apple’s iPhone Ads are known for their use of white backgrounds, preppy music, enthusiastic male narrator and a single, ominous hand holding the device demonstrating its various features and seemingly limitless array of Apps available for download. Bell Canada, one of the newest carriers for Palm’s smartphone, the Pre seems to have been more than just inspired by Apple’s video spots and has nearly copied the Ad bit for bit. While the ad was shot without counseling from Palm, it deviates from the handset maker’s use of a somewhat creepy and sterilizing female narrator describing the Pre’s features in an almost otherworldy experience.

Google Voice Coming To The iPhone In Form Of Web App

Posted August 14, 09 9:59 AM by Tanner Godarzi
Categories: Apple AT&T Competition Google

image Following the fallout from Apple’s removal of several Google Voice compatible iPhone Apps and the banning of Google’s very own App that ties in to the service, the search engine company has opted to create a web based version of the App.

However, the FCC has chosen to intervene and has sent inquires to Apple and AT&T on how the App Store approval process work and whether the cellular carrier had any hand in removing Google Voice compatible Apps. The FCC has also asked Google if it can create a Web based version of Google Voice that can be accessed through Safari. The good news is that Google seems to be working on a Safari compatible version of Google Voice after all.

According to Google, they are currently working on a web app and have mentioned that it will be able to offer the “same features as the rejected app.”

The big problem about creating a Web App over a native App is the lack of functionality such as being able to access the address book and phone App efficiently. I have some skepticism over how this will work… more...

Apple Adopting USB Standard For European iPhones

Posted July 1, 09 8:00 AM by Tanner Godarzi

imagePhone manufacturers across the world use different charger connections and are so diluted that even the same size tip won’t charge every phone there is. That’s why the European Union is proposing a standard for all manufacturers to use: Micro-USB.

Interestingly enough, Apple was one of the top 10 Smartphone manufacturers to back the new universal standard which would obsolete almost every made for iPhone accessory that utilizes the widely adopted 30-pin USB adapter. While the EU calls for a USB based charging standard for all phones, Apple will still have to physically changes to iPhones it sells in Europe over phones sold in other countries. While Apple is no stranger to forcing users to upgrade their accessories when a newer model iPod or iPhone is made available, it is unknown just when the Cupertino based company will bring Micro-USB to the iPhone.

The chargers will be usable only for data-enabled phones, which have more capability than just standard calls and SMS texts. Data-enabled phones are expected to account for almost half of all new mobile handset purchases in 2010.

The Commission hopes that as people discard their old handsets, within three… more...

AT&T Could Cut iPhone Plan Prices

Posted May 18, 09 4:00 AM by Tanner Godarzi

image Another round of speculation is hitting the Internet as analysts share their thoughts on what AT&T’s next move will be once Apple rolls out another update to the iPhone. While we’ve heard everything ranging from an iPhone Nano to a more robust (and wallet burning expensive) iPhone Pro, no one has really thrown the ball in to AT&T’s court but their next big thing could be a price cut.

Yes, a price cut but only on their monthly iPhone plans. Since Apple seems gung-ho on expanding the iPhone in to as many people’s hands and ears as possible, a little nudging towards AT&T’s end to ease the cost of ownership has probably been in the cards for some time. There is nothing set in stone on what the magic number will be but the word going around is a move back to the $20 a month for a limited internet plan. The reduction in monthly rates would go hand in hand nicely with a lower cost (and feature reduced) iPhone which would finally shut up the rumor mill about a $99 iPhone. In addition to a… more...

iPhone “Brick” A Severely Scaled Back Chinese Version?

Posted May 16, 09 10:00 AM by Tanner Godarzi

imageIt’s that time of the year again as Apple preps its next generation iPhone in time for its World Wide Developers Conference, rumors are coming up about the Chinese version of the popular handset. However, it looks like Apple may cave in and disable many of the device’s core features.

Numerous references have been made over time to the iPhone “Brick” which probably brings up thoughts of a unibody like form factor considering similar mentions have yielded the current generation MacBook family which utilizes a Unibody enclosure. However, with the iPhone, the “Brick” mention may hint at what we’ll see in the Chinese version of the device: no 3G and no WiFi. As disheartening as it may sound, it comes as no surprise as Apple has had extreme difficulty in bring the iPhone to China due to harsh carrier demands, the lack of extended cellular radio options being one of them. By stripping out Wifi and 3G, Apple may have a chance to sell the iPhone one of the world’s largest cellular carrier.

Possible Exploit Found In iPhone Safari, Not Yet Serious

Posted April 21, 09 8:00 AM by Tanner Godarzi

imageCharlie Miller, known for his continued research on iPhone vulnerabilities may have found an exploit in Safari that could run low level code in the OS.

Miller first gained notoriety for discovering the first iPhone exploit and another vulnerability in Safari during the Pwn2Own contest in which security researchers and hackers alike attempt to break in to various OS’s running on different platforms. The exploit enables the iPhone to run shell code and if this information were to gain traction, iPhone users could have their device broken in to and have their personal information readily available to an unknown third party. However, there has been no news on any iPhone suffering an attack from this exploit.

Categories: Analysis Competition Rumor

imageAccording to the rumor mill, Apple has ordered 100 million 8 GB Flash modules for use in its next generation iPhone.

The 100 million pieces of 8 GB Flash modules would then be further combined, likely in increments of 8, 16 and 32 GB sizes. There has been little world on the other applications Apple would could use with this much memory besides creating an iPod Touch with memory sizes larger than 32 GBs.

Analyst Predicts What We’ve All Been Thinking: More Expensive iPhone Won’t Apple

Posted March 31, 09 8:00 AM by Tanner Godarzi

image Rumors have been swirling around what the next generation iPhone will include and often times personal wants get mixed in as well but a Canadian analyst is pointing out the obvious. A higher end iPhone will all the dream features we want won’t help Apple’s sales.

The iPhone 3G took off drastically thanks to its inclusion of 3G, wider availability and of course a massive price cut over the last generation. Lowering the price would help Apple sell more iPhones but introducing an “iPhone Pro” would add little to Apple’s revenue according to Mike Abramsky, a Royal Bank of Canada analyst. While he does think some kind of fuller featured iPhone will arrive eventually, he speculates it won’t receive the same kind of sales growth the iPhone 3G did. Despite the rumors though, Analysts are very positive about the iPhone’s sales outlook as Gene Muster predicts 4.4 million handsets will be sold in Q2 2009.
