more...‘Activate and Cancel’ still holds true after iTunes update…
Over at InfoWorld, Tom Yager found out that even amidst the newest iTunes update (7.3.2)/iPhone Firmware 1.0.1, his suggested method of ‘activate and cancel’ still works! What ‘activate and cancel’ means, is that you activate the iPhone, and then cancel the agreement with AT&T within 14 days, and the iPhone will still work and you won’t be penalized for the cancellation (if cancelled within 14 days).
I like the idea of this personally because I think it’s completely stupid for the iPhone to be completely locked out unless you agree to a 2-year AT&T agreement. I mean, can you imagine how many would buy the iPhone, just for the widescreen iPod part of it? For PDA funtions? This provides a pretty safe way of doing it without having to deal with hacks. Cool!

iPhone Tips: Tap and Hold
David Chartier, over at TUAW has written up his rather informative tip regarding Safari on the iPhone.

Apparently, if you tap your finger on a link within Safari, but hold your finger there rather than letting go, you’ll get a little pop-up appear informing you the title of the link you’re about to visit plus the URL for that link, so you know where abouts you’re headed. Pretty clever that you can hold your finger there for extra information if you ask me, I’m now starting to wonder if there are other areas of the iPhone where this can be done.
Well spotted David!
more...Super Caller ID on the iPhone
Besides the ipod, the mail, and the web, let’s not forget the iPhone can make calls. The keen eyes at iPods.net noticed something that I haven’t heard about before. The so-called “Super Caller ID.”
The site noticed that when you go through your missed calls, not only will the iPhone display the number of the missed call, it will also list the area of the country in which the number is based.

In this example, the phone number displayed is a Nextel cell phone from the Ventura, CA area, and the iPhone came back with the number being from the “Northern Los Angeles Area.” We also did a few other tests and the iPhone was extremely accurate with cell phone and landline numbers from around the New York Metro area.
Nothing bugs me more than phantom callers to my phone. At least I will know where they are from now.
