imageOne of the biggest improvements Firmware 3.0 brought to the iPhone was universal search and while it’s included in select Applications already, here’s a tip to empower your search from the Mail App.

If you have a MobileMe account added to Mail already, just go in to your mailbox and flick until you reach the top of screen. Tap in your query in to the search bar and scroll to the bottom of the list of results. You should see “Continue Search on Server,” at the very bottom which will look through any mail you have stored on Apple’s servers.

15 iPhone Hacks And Workarounds To Make Your Mobile Life Easier

Posted July 14, 09 4:00 AM by Tanner Godarzi

The iPhone is among one of the easiest to use gadgets there is but we’re always looking for a quick fix or just something to make it a little more easier.

iSmashphone has compiled a list of 15 tips and tricks to get more out of your iPhone (spoiler: only a few require jailbreaking your device) ranging from the simple addition of an extension to a contact all the way to using Skype over 3G. One particularly useful trick we’ve yet to see get any attention is multiple computer syncing:

Apple only allows you to sync your iPhone with one iTunes library at a time. When you attempt to sync your iPhone to another computer, you get the following message: “Sync_alert.” There is an easy way to “trick” iTunes. All you need to do is switch the “Library Persistent ID”. Read “How to sync your iPhone with multiple computers” for the full step-by-step process.

Tip of The Week

It has been a while since I’ve posted a tip, however, now that we have a fresh new iPhone out, I have some fresh new tips for you!

The most anticipated feature of the iPhone 3GS is the ability to record video. It looks great, and you can post it to YouTube right from your phone, although I haven’t started doing this yet.

One thing that was bugging me was the ability to get it on my computer. Of course Mac users like myself can simply pull up iPhoto - voila! But that is a big import sometimes.

So the quickest way I know of is to use the Image Capture app which sees both photos and videos recorded on your iPhone. Just open it up, find the video, drag it into Finder, and watch! Simple, eh?

Windows users can get to their iPhone 3GS videos in Windows Explorer.

Enable Restrictions on the iPhone

imageChances are that Apple will have a new iPhone model rolling out within the next 3 months. That means you’ll want a new iPhone which means you’ll want to unload your old one. One decent place to unload an old iPhone is to your kid, iPhones are still pretty cool and the kid will love it. On the other hand you don’t want your kid surfing the porno sites and buying apps left and right. A quandary one supposes.

Perhaps not, it turns out that Apple has built in a method to control just what an iPhone managed by you can do even when you’re not around. The peace of mind restoring, functionality robbing feature is called restrictions and you can learn how to keep kids (or anyone else) from doing things with their iPhone you don’t want them to by checking out a tutorial posted at iPhone and iPod touch and kids. The parental control features aren’t as robust as the ones built in to OS X but with the controls and a few choice browsers you can rest easy.

iPhone Tip of the Week ({UPDATE}

I enjoy taking pictures with my iPhone. With geotagging built in and my iLife 09’ software, it is just great to take pictures on my phone, however, you can’t take the clearest pictures with the iPhone. Let me tell you how they can get a little clearer - just a little.

This may seem more like a review more than a tip because I use an application from the app store. Either way, this is a great app to take clearer pictures. The app is called ClearCam. You may have passed by it a few times in the App Store.

What make ClearCam neat is that it takes 4 megapixel images through special processing on your iPhone. This is cool because ClearCam claims to use special processing technology to produce a crisp image equal to 4 megapixels out of the built in 2 megapixel camera.

Using the camera is just like the default iPhone camera app, point and shoot. When you take a picture it actually takes six pictures to produce the highest quality image. From there you can choose to align the images and enhance them. Once done you can save… more...

One of the features in version 2.2 of the iPhone software included Emoji support for customers living in Japan. Well, some of us aren’t in Japan, so us Americans weren’t able to use them without hacking. However, a recent discovery has made it possible to do so without hacking.

To enable Emoji, simply buy a Japanese RSS reader called FrostyPlace. It’s $0.99, but for anyone that loves Emoji will definitely buy this app. This tip only works in 2.2, so make sure you have it.

Once installed, run the app and tap on a story. Do get distraught because it is all in Japanese. Once you do that, go back to your Home Screen, hit settings and go to General—->Keyboard—->International Keyboards—->Japanese—->Enable Emoji. Excellent!

There you have it! Now you can impress your friends with cool Emoji icons. If you don’t see them, play with the app a little more, and go back to the International Keyboards setting and try again.

Enjoy! smile

I spend a good deal of money on my 3G iPhone, and I don’t even get 3G in my area! Fortunately, I save at least 15%, and here is how you can do it too.

According to AT&T, college and university students, as well as employees of certain companies, are eligible for a 15% discount on their entire monthly plan.

I was able to ask an AT&T employee and he told me, “For those colleges/universities and some employers who are eligible, you are in return eligible for a service discounts. No phone discounts.” I graduated college 3 years ago and my college email address was, of course, no longer available, however, the company I work for was eligible.

To take advantage of the discount, go to AT&T’s discount page and use your student or work email to verify your eligibility. If your email doesn’t work, you’ll need to stop by a corporate AT&T store with proof of employment/enrollment. Once verified, it will take a few bill cycles to take effect.

Good luck! smile

Now that WiFi is making its way to planes, you might want to know how to use WiFi while the phone is in Airplane Mode.

A feature in V2.0 is the ability to use WiFi while in Airplane Mode. To do this, simply enable Airplane Mode and then switch on WiFi. Simple! The orange airplane icon will stay in the status bar and WiFi will be enabled.

I’m sure this tip is useful for other cases as well such as no signal wherever you may be.

Enjoy! smile

I review a plethora of applications and something that always bothered me was the fact that in order to get a review application, the develpoer had to send me a gift card. I’d redeem the gift card on my computer, download the app, and then plug in my iPhone to get the application.

Fortunately, Apple’s announcement last week allows developers to give away promotional copies of their apps. That makes things a little simpler, but still, you have to go to your computer, redeem the promotional code, and get the app; That is, until now.

If you have not discovered this yet, then you’ll really love this. According to Apple, you must redeem the code with iTunes on your computer which will then download the app for syncing to your iPhone. However, to redeem an app promo code, open the iTunes app on your iPhone, tap “Downloads” and then “Redeem.”

Enter your code and iTunes will tell you that the iPhone must be synced in order to download the app. Don’t worry though! If you exit the iTunes app and open the App Store, your app will immediately begin downloading in the background. After a few seconds, you can exit… more...
