Secure that iPhone

Posted September 5, 08 9:30 AM by Chris Seibold
Categories: Hacks Software Tutorials

imageWired has a how to up explaining various ways to secure your iPhone. The post covers everything from enabling auto lock (who would’ve have thought of that) to remapping the home button (what the?) If you’re serious about securing your iPhone and keeping your data away from prying eyes this is a good place to start.

Don’t feel too secure because if you tune into an O’Reilly webcast on September 11th you’ll be instructed on how to bypass the passcode lock by hacker Jonathan Zdziarski. Don’t worry, your security efforts won’t be for naught, the technique uses a custom firmware bundle and likely won’t be as easy to implement as the double tap crack.

Installer.App Updated

Posted May 21, 08 1:00 PM by Jovan Washington

Installer.app has been updated with some, from what I hear, annoyances.

Installer.app received a search feature, and the slight hesitation after installing new programs that sends you back to your unlock screen, has been fixed.

It now quickly relaunches your Home Screen to seamlessly load the newly downloaded programs, which essentially makes Installer.app and its functions even more integrated into the iPhone.

Other noteworthy items in the update include the ability to refresh one source at a time and a search feature in the Uninstall category.

Now in v3.11, Installer.app is becoming a powerhouse of a program and perhaps the most integrated native app that jailbreaking has to offer.

Installer.app is automatically installed when you jailbreak your iPhone with iLiberty+ or ZiPhone.

Yesterday, the software has updated to version 3.0 and includes some much anticipated features by some. They include, No more need of fix nvram, solution for GREYED wifi, no need for YouTube Fixes, embedded apps installer, and customized plugins.

The new release is available in both Mac and Windows versions and you can get it here. Enjoy!

iPhone Firmware 2.0 Jailbroken

Posted March 11, 08 10:00 AM by Jovan Washington
Categories: Apple Hacks News

The iPhone Dev Team published a a screenshot of what is reported to be a jailbroken iPhone 2.0 installation. According to some sources, the Dev team has already jailbroken the beta 2.0 iPhone firmware that Apple has only released to a limited number of testers.

The jailbroken iPhone freely allows installation of iPhone applications, bypassing Apple’s $99/year developer program which includes a developers certificate.

So even though the iPhone innards is now open, there are those still jailbreaking the iPhone. Amazing, isn’t it? Why is this still going on?

The jailbreaking process will allow users to install those applications which fall outside of Apple’s guidelines.

As we all know, Apple will be releasing the iPhone 2.0 software in June alongside the new Apps Store via iTunes. Be prepared by an astonishing amount of applications, including Apple’s “not allowed” (jailbroken).

Warning: Do Not Jailbreak 1.1.4, Yet

Posted February 26, 08 2:47 PM by Tanner Godarzi
Categories: Announcements Hacks News

You may have already downloaded 1.1.4 to update for your iPhone and while ZiBri’s Jailbreak will work, he’s cautioned users to refrain from doing so until any bugs can be worked out and the Firmware can be further analyzed.

One problem that has surfaced is that previously installed Applications will not be shown on the Springboard. Reinstalling these Apps will fix the problem.
You should see an official fix in a few days.

Unsanity Wants To Skin Your iPhone For A High Price

imageThe dominant Application for skinning and changing even the most minute of the iPhone’s interface is the very aptly named “Customize.app” and while it’s the only good thing available, the folks behind Unsanity are aiming to introduce their sorely missed skills to the iPhone.

You might recall the massive crap storm that brewed when users found that the program Application Enhancer which interferes with the OS on a very deep level to change many aspects of the interface caused problems when users tried to install Leopard. While the problem was solved they’ve decided to apply their expertise (and I use this term lightly since I have yet to see any major GUI improvements from them, only from the community) to the iPhone in perhaps the most horrid way possible. And by horrid I mean on the levels of the school bully taking your lunch money except he pretends to be Jason Statham.

The proposition is $20 for six months to use an Application that lets you set your Springboard wallpaper to N-Sync’s lead singer. No, don’t write a comment wailing at me for not supporting the development community and that your… more...

Mod An iPhone Box, Into A Camera

Posted February 18, 08 10:00 AM by Tanner Godarzi

imageYou’ve unpacked your iPhone and all you’re left with is a box and the usual junk instruction manuals, what do you do with the rest? Scot Hampton had the same question and took the opportunity to make a pin hole camera, from an iPhone box.

Dubbed the iHole, the cardboard camera uses common household parts and of course some film. Unfortunately there are no building instructions but you can find out more about the project from Scot’s Blog

ModMyiFone Creates GUI Frontend For Zibri’s Jailbreak

Posted February 18, 08 7:00 AM by Tanner Godarzi
Categories: Development Hacks

Earlier we reported about iJailbreak being able to Jailbreak and unlock iPhones (Mac compatible) running 1.1.2/1.1.3 with Bootloader 4.6 which used Zibree’s utility to do the dirty work. While Zibree had created the ulity and compatible for Windows only, ModMyiFone created another Mac/Windows version of the App with a GUI frontend.

The App does everything Zibree’s utility and will unlock/jailbreak your iPhone running 1.1.2/1.1.3 with Bootloader 4.6. Bootloader 3.9 support is available and can be Jailbroken but unlocking must be done with AnySIM or other method of choice.

Breif: Does Taping The SIM Down Really Help?

Categories: Hacks

Earlier we reported about a method of boosting your iPhone’s cellular signal using a piece of tape to increase contact between the metal pins. IPhone Alley put it to the test and found that the increases were minimal.

If any of our readers have found any improvements or decreases in signal, sound off in the comments.

iJailbreak Opens Up 1.1.3, Mac Compatible

Posted February 14, 08 4:00 AM by Tanner Godarzi
Categories: Hacks News

Yesterday David wrote about a great utility recently made available that will automatically Jailbreak your recently upgraded iPhone but the only downside is the Windows only tag. Alongside Zibri’s utility was an equally awesome App, iJailbreak, was updated to accomplish the same thing but brings Mac compatibility.

Although it has been tested for iPhones running fresh out of the box with Firmware 1.1.3 and Bootloader 4.6, I managed to get it working on my iPhone running Bootloader 4.6 and upgraded to 1.1.3. I jumped the gun and ended unlocking my iPhone but it works.

The latest version can be downloaded from the main site http://ijailbreak.com/ and even more impressive is the developer behind the App, 13 year old AriX.
