Web Apps: Remote Desktop for iPhone

imageHave you ever needed info on your computer, but you were not at your computer? Most of us have, and there are many ways to get info when it is needed. But have you heard of a Remote desktop application made for the iPhone? RDM+ is just that, a Remote Desktop application for the iPhone. As with other such desktop based programs you can access and manage your email, files, programs and network resources. You have to sign up with them, and provide them with the necessary info (not sure how secure it is). Once this is done you have near complete access to your desktop from your iPhone. There are other options in desktop access, but these do not cater to or work well with the iPhone. One such alternative option is logmein, which is hard to operate from the iPhone. Think of RDM+ as a simple version of Back To My Mac, but for your iPhone. One more thing, it is windows only. Sorry Mac users!

3rd Party Apps: Game Boy Advance for iPhone

Posted November 14, 07 12:24 AM by Don Palmigiano

imageWe have had the NES app for a while now, so why not bring true mobile gaming to the mobile iPhone? Now there is another emulator available for the iPhone, and this one features the ability to run ROMs of almost any game you can find on the Game Boy Advance. GpSPhone is the name of this first GBA emulator.

The emulator has just received an update. This update fixes many bugs including those having to do with compatibility. The new update, 0.0.5, looks like nothing major, but truly is a big step towards better emulation on the iPhone. Hopefully, after this update, more will be running GpSPhone on their iPhone.

Don’t let the version 0.0.5 fool you, this is a large update. Thanks to a large amount of help from NerveGas (NES.app author), we now have a much improved GUI and sound!
Also some performance fixes were implemented via the default frameskip settings and some dynarec tweaks.

There are still some problems, but I have optimism that these problems will soon be addressed.

iApp-a-Day #11: Uncle

imageUncle is the Eleventh in a series of Apps released by developer Sean Herber. All Apps are released through AppTapp by installing the iApp-a-Day source.

Uncle is a fun little App that imitates a Steve Jobs bobble head. When you turn the bobble head enough times it will start saying the most famous (or funny depending how you look at it) quote ever uttered at a keynote by the CEO: “Boom.”

When the bobble head starts talking it will continue until you quit of the App. If not, your iPhone will be yelling “Boom!” “And Boom!” until you make it go boom by slamming it into a table out of sheer frustration.

imageRoses is the eleventh Application in a series of Apps released by developer Sean Herber. All Apps are released through AppTapp by installing the iApp-a-Day source.

Roses has no real meaning and is meant to be a very, very simple time waster. A flurry of violets shoot from the center of the screen and increase as their are touched. The stream changes if you swirl your finger around it.

imageQuest is the tenth Application in a series of Apps released by developer Sean Herber. All Apps are released through AppTapp by installing the iApp-a-Day source.

Quest, like Secrets, relies on the community. The purpose of Qwest is to go on a scavenger hunt for pictures that meet certain criteria but are commonly found. You can participate in two ways. One way is to rank the constant flow of snapshots evaluate if they are relevant or not.

The other is to actually participate in the hunt by taking snapshots of whatever Quest wants you to take.

If you aren’t too fond of US president then you’ll get a kick out of Poke. Poke cycles through various images of George Bush every time you poke his face in various locations. The points are random every time a new picture appears.

There isn’t a point to Poke but it sure is a great way to get your anger out if poking Government officials is your thing.

Options the Secret Life of Steve Jobs

Posted November 10, 07 9:53 PM by Don Palmigiano

imageIf you read Fake Steve Jobs you are probably familiar with the funny and amusing attitude which he uses to depict real life icon Steve Jobs. The man, Daniel Lyons, has written a book all about Steve Jobs and Cupertino. He uses his usual hilarious writing in this satire, reliving all of the stock and options trouble that Steve Jobs underwent. It is written with a bombastic style which reflects the earlier outlook and lifestyle of the man we have come to adore.  It was a pleasure to read this book and admire the awesomeness that is (fictional?) Steve jobs.

It is Tuesday afternoon. I am barefoot, sitting on a cushion in the lotus position, gazing at a circuit board. This board, no bigger than a playing card, has taken years to create. It is the heart of the iPhone, the most important object my engineers have ever assembled. And it is wrong.
I do not know why, exactly. But it is wrong. By this I do not mean that the board does not function correctly. It functions perfectly. But it lacks beauty. My engineers argue that a circuit board need not… more...

Web Apps: Seeqpod

imageThis is the most amazing thing ever. Have you ever been with friends and they asked if you had a certain song and you did not? Well with internet streaming of music through Seeqpod, you have almost every song ever made right at your fingertips. It can stream off edge or Wi-Fi. You can have the song playing within about 5 seconds (based on connection type and speed). Now you do not have to worry about that 8gb of music getting you down, you have unlimited storage (on some server)! Searching is easy and the menus work well. The overall performance and significance of this app are great. This is definitely an app worth checking out (currently my favorite application). To all app makers: Keep up the good work!

You can test it out on your iPhone here.

Web Apps: Google Reader Updates iPhone Interface

Posted November 8, 07 10:12 PM by Don Palmigiano

imageMany people like to read blogs to keep in touch with news that has occured recently, and instead of going to each and every site, some use RSS. Google Reader, for those who are not familiar with it, is an RSS reader and collector. Imagine an inbox for all of the new stories that are published daily. When a story comes out, a summary (or the full text) can be read in Google Reader and then marked as read. This way you will never miss a headline, and you may read them at any pace that is comfortable. Google had previously developed a web interface formatted specially for iPhone users. This granted ease of use with the 3.5 inch screen. The old version had limited access to features found in the desktop version. This is common with many other mobile apps, but it got annoying when you wanted to check your feeds or tags.

Now Google has fixed this, and you can use these options. Another thing that I enjoyed was the repositioning of some of the key buttons. I have found that they have been placed more conveniently and with a more… more...
