Actual iPhone Numbers Below Expectations. But Why?
It’s official. AT&T announced that they signed up 146,000 iPhone customers to their network. Although this number is a far cry from the originally expected 500,000, it is also well in line with early analyst estimates.
AT&T’s stock was up and Apple’s were falling after this announcement.
So what does that mean for Apple? Reports of brisk sales are still coming in from Apple stores and AT&T locations. And there is certainly no shortage of iPhone stories in the press. In my mind, this number reinforces what some had suspected all along: hype inflated expectations. That’s what I think. What do you think? What do you attribute this “below-expectation” iPhone sales number to?

OK. This lack of 3G issue still bugs me. It bugs me because I am still using my Motorola Q on Verizon Wireless over my new iPhone when I really need to find something fast.
Full internet? The real internet on your phone? I’m finding that I really don’t care. I’ll take the stripped down “fake” internet if it meant it was running faster. The iPhone running on EDGE is like having a Porsche 911 that tops off at 40 MPH. Sure, it will get you to your destination but at such a slow pace that you would rather drive the Corolla and max it out at 75MPH. What a tease.
As I reported earlier in the week, Steve Jobs cited battery life/power consumption and the thickness in form factor as 2 main reasons for no-3G capability. I contend that people had no expectations of how thick the iPhone had to be. And an increase in millimeters is negligible. I also contend that even if the battery life was smaller, people would still line up for the iPhone and deal with recharging midday if it meant 3G.
Which leads me to today’s poll. If… more...

Survey Says One in Three Americans Want the iPhone
A new survey from Lightspeed Research shows Apple’s iPhone completely rocking the awareness and lust factor of the American consumer. Among the staggering results: One out of every three Americans who do not currently own an iPhone, plan on eventually getting one.
Thirty-two percent of those surveyed who do not currently own an iPhone stated that they do intend to purchase one, with 8 percent planning to purchase in the next three months and 22 percent planning to purchase “some time in the future” the researchers said.
In addition, the survey provides some other juicy bits of information:
-A whopping 90% of those surveyed knew what the iPhone was which makes the 32% number even better. (basically, if 10% of responders had no clue what the iPhone even was then 32% of the 90% who did is a great number for Steve and Co to brag about.
-The West Coast of the United States wants the iPhone more than the average. New England and Mid-Atlantic want it pretty bad too.
-“nearly half of those who would like to own an iPhone stated that the benefits of having music, movie, internet and wireless all in one was the… more...

Apple Store or AT&T Store? The Pros and Cons
So you have made up your mind and gosh darn it, you are going to go and get an iPhone on Friday. Now comes the big decision. Will you wait in line at the Apple Store or the AT&T Store? Here are a few pros and cons for each:
The Apple Store
PROS:
- Locations tend to be in malls where you can take turns with someone in line to grab a bite, stretch your legs, and take a leak all while indoors.
- The Apple Store is a place where you can show your true fanboy status without being made fun of.
- You can definitely pick up Made for iPhone accessories with your iPhone.
- The clean, minimalist interior design of the Apple Store will keep you relaxed as you wait for hours and hours.
- Apple stores are more likely to have experience with huge crowds.
CONS:
- Most people will line up at the Apple Store making your chances of scoring one much less.
- It is still not determined whether Apple will be able to set up your voice… more...

“This lack of clarity could adversely impact consumers’ purchase decisions”
No this quote is not in reference to the glass screen or when the iPhone will go on sale. It is a quote from Shiv K. Bakhshi, director of mobility research at IDC. His firm conducted a new poll on customers’ willingness to purchase the iPhone on June 29th.

The response was lackluster compared to some of the previously reported survey results. This was due, not because of the technology, but the contract requirements and the hefty unsubsidized price tag.
Among the survey’s findings, only 10 percent of the respondents indicated an interest in acquiring an iPhone if it meant paying full price for the phone and signing a two-year service contract with the recently renamed AT&T.
The survey by IDC also revealed that the numbers would increase if (Uh, Duh) the price point dropped to $299 or it was made available with the customer’s current cell provider.

19,000,000 People Want to Buy the iPhone
According to the market research firm M:Metrics, 19 million Americans have a “strong interest in purchasing the iPhone.”
“This data confirms that the iPhone has sparked the imaginations of consumers and is not merely a topic of conversation among insiders and technology enthusiasts,” said Mark Donovan, senior vice president and senior analyst, M:Metrics.
19 million Americans is a lot of people! And don’t worry: they assured us in their study that they did in fact tell people how much it would cost them and how AT&T is the only provider. Even more staggering, 67% of those people are subscribers on other phone networks.
Here are some stats to put the 19 million number in perspective:
Current U.S. Population: 302,121,988
Current number of iPods Sold: 100,000,000+
Current number of Motorola RAZRs Sold: 50,000,000+
Current number of AT&T Wireless Subscribers: 49,100,000+
