Despite Apple’s claims that their multitouch technology is proprietary to the iPhone and the Macbook Air, it seems like they may be developing some even more advanced functions for future devices. The 2007 patent filing, entitled “Gesturing with a multipoint sensing device” was recently dug up by MacRumors. In the patent, Apple suggests that the new multitouch technology could be used to perform functions such as copy, paste, cut, redo, and select all. Furthermore, users could use their thumb and index finger in conjunction to create new files or open existing ones.

Several functions are also attributed to the pinky finger. Differentiating between the hand’s five digits sounds tricky, so we’re not sure exactly how Apple plans on doing it. Maybe a touchpad so sensitive it could recognize which finger was being used, and attribute certain functions to that digit? Hopefully getting a paper cut on your finger won’t mean you’ll be banned from opening new windows for a week.
