Many of us sorely underestimate just how popular the iPhone 3G really has become. After a 25-hour survey of Apple stores nationwide, investment bank Piper Jaffray has estimated that Apple is set to beat its goal of 4 million iPhone sales in September alone.

“Our 25 hours of counting iPhone sales in Apple retail stores throughout the country lead us to believe Apple is on pace to beat our previous estimate of 4.1 million iPhones for the September quarter,” reported analyst Gene Munster.

In addition, Munster estimates that Apple will sell 4.47 million iPhones in this following quarter, compared to an already-impressive 1.12 million in last year’s quarter.

“We believe that our revision may be conservative and that Apple will meet our estimates,” Munster writes. “The August 22nd launch in additional countries should provide another catalyst to sales.”
