Apple Will Refuse Service on Hacked Phone

Posted September 21, 2007 11:00 AM by Jovan Washington

We already know Steve Jobs will “ensure that you will not unlock your iPhone,” so updates are going to try to keep that from happening. What we might not have known is that he may have sent a message all over to deny service to your iPhone if hacked.

ZDNet’s, The Apple Core Blog, has reported that iPhones are being blacklisted. They note that if your iPhone is hacked, you may want to restore your iPhone back to default. These nifty little programs such as SummerBoard, and iFuntastic are not wanted. God forbid if your iPhone is unlocked!

A colleague of one blogger went into an Apple store and was initially refused service for his iPhone due to a combination of 3rd party applications on his iPhone and—:bug: GASP—unlocked (T-Mobile)!

So while he eventually got Apple to return the iPhone (after paying the restocking fee, that is), the lesson here is to do a restore of your iPhone and re-install the factory AT&T SIM before bringing into an Apple Store for service. That’s the beauty of software-only hacks, after all!

Even more concerning is that his iPhone was blacklisted from future service, but after talking with a manager, that was lifted.

If I ever get around to hacking my phone, I’ll be sure to restore!

  1. They mentioned this on a recent episode of the Tuesday Night Tech podcast where they went into an Apple store with a horribly cracked iPhone—good fun!
