Are You Experiencing WiFi Problems with your iPhone?

When iPhone 3.0 launched, there were a few reports of WiFi problems but a simple network reset or OS restore seem to calm the clatter.

Tuaw is reporting that the problem is back with a vengeance for iPhone users. Are you one of them?

Users note that signal strength can fluctuate between one and full bars even when standing right next to the router or when a computer nearby shows a constant signal. This goes along with a commensurate reduction in speed. Even at full signal on both the computer and the 3GS, one user reports getting a maximum of 3Mbit downloads on the iPhone while getting nearly 7Mbit downloads on a MacBook using the O2 network. The fluctuating signal strength problem has affected me since I brought home my new iPhone 3GS.

If you are experiencing problems, let us know. I am not experiencing any problems, for for those who are, perhaps you’ll see some light at the end of the tunnel with the next update to be released near the end of the summer.

  6. I have a 3GS and haven’t had any problems yet.  Get great speed through it on my home network and at work.

  7. Try turning off Bluetooth, and see if the fluctuation in signal strength stops. I know of at least one reproducible case where this works.

  8. Oh Yes!! I have been experiencing this weird behavior too. My SE P1i get the WiFi and 3G does not…

  9. Yes, sadly. Includes repeated prompts for wifi password, random lists of available networks, less graceful autoconnection to known networks. This has been my main (really, only) peeve with 3.0. This flakiness is new with the upgrade.

  10. Yes, definitely.
Before 3.0 my router with WiFi covered my whole house and part of the garden. After 3.0, with the same hardware, the area is reduced by half, signal fluctuates, connection drops etc. Other devices we use works under WiFi well and without any change.

  11. I’ve been having the issue with my 3GS.  It reminds me of the way my Windows Mobile devices worked.  When new, the WiFi settings are in power-save mode and connection speeds are quite a bit slower.  Turning off the power-save mode for WiFi brought the speed up to what it should be.  With my 3GS, there are no settings for this.  Personally, I think they put the WiFi in power-save mode without a user setting to change it.

  12. Yes, both my wife and I experience this, especially on our home network, sometimes the signal drops off all together and apps like Remote say they can’t find the network, then it magically reappears.  We both have iPhone 3G.

  13. I have an iPhone 3G, an iPod touch, an iMac and a Windows based laptop.  My router is a Linksys router.  Both my iMac and my iPhone 3G (after upgrading to OS 3.0) are having problems staying connected to my wireless.  I don’t see this problem with my Windows PC and the iPod.

The iMac sits right next to the router and I ended up using a direct cable for my connection (that works fine) and disabled wireless.

The iPhone gets signal next to the router (sometimes), but no longer gets signal in my bedroom, meanwhile my wife using the iPod touch right next to me (still running the original OS it shipped with OS 2.x) gets very good signal, I always end up getting connected with 3G.  My Windows laptop also works fine in the bedroom.  I tried resetting the network settings on the iPhone as well as a few reboots, but the problem persists.  I will likely call Apple or go to the store this weekend.

  14. Turn off BlueTooth when you are on WiFi. It works for me.

  15. I’ve heard that this also helps. If you turn your bluetooth off while you are on WiFi, that could be the problem. Another solution would be to restore your iPhone using your most recent backup.

  16. Turning off bluetooth did not do it for me.  Restoring would I guess take me back to pre-OS 3.0 upgrade state, which I guess you are correct should fix this issue as this was working fine prior to OS 3.0

  18. I’ve had wifi issues since 2.2.1 on my iPhone Original.  There are several threads about it on the Apple Discussion boards.  Nothing works except a 10 minute dip in the freezer. I think the wifi chip is fried and the freezer contracts the fissures.

  19. We ran into problems connecting over Wi-Fi when Bluetooth is turned on when developing our game, iSamurai: Real Life Sword Fight. Turning off Bluetooth while playing over Wi-Fi resolves the problem. And turning off Wi-Fi when playing over Bluetooth also handles it.

We have been working with Apple on this, and they are working on a permanent resolution. So people who are having Wi-Fi problems may want to turn off their Bluetooth connection to see if that helps. Turning off Bluetooth definitely handles the issue when playing iSamurai over Wi-Fi (and turning off Wi-Fi handles the issue when playing over Bluetooth).

  20. No WiFi AP pairing issues persay but an application that originates local TCP connections fails on v3.  The target machine does not receive any TCP packets (!) However after exactly 1 minute delay it then connects - presumably on a retry
