Augmented Reality Apps Coming To iPhone 3.1

Posted July 26, 2009 6:00 AM by Tanner Godarzi

imageAugmented reality is the next new thing to hit the iPhone and Apps are starting to spring up taking advantage of the feature. However, full support won’t come until Firmware 3.1 sometime this fall.

Augmented reality Apps take information from nearby monuments and locations based off of GPS coordinates and superimposes on a 3D render of your nearby location. Apple is holding off on giving developers the go ahead to publish Apps that utilize augmented reality due to the use of an unpublished camera API. The API will be included in the Firmware 3.1 update coming sometime this fall according to a developer who spoke with Apple:

Apple told Acrossair, developer of the Nearest Tube train finder, that the app will be approved for distribution after Apple releases version 3.1 of the iPhone software, which the developer expects will land in early September.
