Downgrading from 1.1.1 to 1.0.2 : With Caveats

There now appears to be a documented and proven way to downgrade your 1.1.1 phone to the 1.0.2 firmware. This will allow you to jailbreak the phone and install 3rd party apps. HOWEVER, don’t get too excited, there is a big gotcha: The phone will not work (no incoming or outgoing calls or EDGE data connectivity). The reason is that there still does not appear to be a way to downgrade the baseband firmware. This solution will help those folks who mistakenly upgraded their phones to 1.1.1 and now have bricked iPhones. Its not the solution we are looking for but at least you will have an open iPod Touch!

Full details on how to do this can be found here at the iPhone Dev Wiki

  1. I upgraded my AppTapp-but-not-SIM-unlocked iPhone (after restoring 1.0.2) on thursday, and bricked it.  Following the new instructions this morning, I now have a yellow-restore triangle, indicating I’m back to 1.0.2, but I have the bozo IMEI, so I can’t activate my phone again, even though AppTapp said it successfully installed.  Too bad it doesn’t automatically install ssh. smile

Oh well, $600 for a pretty shiny brick.  My mistake, but a reasonable mistake.
