FCC to Intervene in Battle with AT&T and Apple to Allow Google Voice on iPhone?

With the focus on Google’s fight to become a major player in the wireless arena, the future of mobile devices is in the balance, reports Leslie Cauley of USA Today.

While Google Voice might have been the trigger, the FCC’s mission is actually much loftier: making sure the mobile Web is an open, consumer-friendly environment like the Internet. What regulators don’t want is for the mobile Web to follow in the footsteps of cable TV or traditional (voice) wireless, where operators tightly control the consumer experience.

With profits expected to double in the mobile space within 5 years, it’s no wonder that Google wants to play ball, nor is it surprising that AT&T and Apple are playing hardball by banning Google Voice. The FCC hears the case on August 21 and its decision will surely set the precedent for many similar cases to follow.

At stake are two main issues: should the iPhone’s maker and carrier be able to ban applications by competitors on their mobile device (s); and how does this effect the larger mobile Web space. Currently it’s standard practice for carriers and makers of mobile devices to have control over content. However, if the FCC finds that this is leading to unfair monopolies or will be punitive to consumers it may well rule against Apple and AT&T sending shock waves through the industry. Such a ruling by the FCC could ultimately benefit all consumers by making mobile devices simply portals for accessing the mobile web. Eli Noam, director of Columbia University’s Tele-Information Institute, a top telecom think-tank, says “Overseas, it’s common for people to buy wireless devices at a store, just as they would a TV, and use it with any carrier.”

I hope that the FCC finds for Google. But if it does, a big brick in the wall of what makes the iPhone unique and competitive—it’s extensive proprietary apps and ability to control what those are—will be removed, and who knows if the whole Apple edifice will come crumbling down as result. My hope is that Apple will simply do what it’s done so successfully in the past, adapt by being smarter and prettier than the competition in this incredibly Darwinian struggle for the future of mobile communication.

  2. Its time for Apple to embrace the Google Voice application and do it in such a way that doesnt let the government decide their fate in a way that’s far more reaching than Google Voice.

    I’m actually surprised they let it get this far.  I know AT&t doesn’t want Google Voice, as they want to delay MMS and tethering, but this is all going to be a black eye for both if they dont get their act together and embrace what got them on the map in the first place, by defining where the industry should have taken itself long ago.

    Its really up to the two of them, decide their own destiny or have the FCC decide it for them.  Not really rocket science if you take emotions and corporate greed ou of the picture.

Apple has a right and a responsibility to not release apps until they have certified it.  This will hopefully keep the bad guys out of my phone.  They also have the right to decide what they want in their product.  If someone writes an app that conflicts with their business plan, then they should be able to keep it off their phone.

    We all have the right to vote with our wallets.  When we purchased our iPhone, this app didn’t exist.  So, I can’t say that they have taken somethig away from me or my purchase.  That is except for the idea that I was buying a phone that held the potential to be so much more.  They have shown that there are limits.  And that’s fine.  But it’s not what I thought they were all about.  It seems they have fallen into the bureaucracy of the Death Star (AT&T). 

    Goog has outdone AT&T and the features offered by AT&T.  Goog’s SCE is better than AT&T’s (or at least it is fair to say that they are more creative with their SCE).

    Pulling the plug on Google Voice has everything to do with giving AT&T time to build some of the features that they should have built in the first place.

    For Apple I say this; standing in the way of technology advancements has never done anyone any good.  You will be standing there, and everyone will go around you.  Just ask Sony how standing on the technology of the Walkman worked out for them?  Oh yea, you already know how that story ended….. Ok, ask Sony how standing on that better Beta tape thing worked out.  Dang! iPod does that too. 

    Time to get back into the innovation business, Apple.  Put your time and resources into extending the lead.
