First Look at WiFi Music Store at Starbucks

Starbucks and Apple launched their iTunes partnership in New York and Seattle on Tuesday. In one of its 600 locations, they started off on the wrong foot, but it is a promising service that I hope my Starbucks gets very soon.

It was reported by Macworld, that opening day had a few bugs that were unexpected. They were able to go on with test to reveal they enjoyed the service very much.

I was able to see the current song, and the last songs played—until my connection was lost. A little later in the morning, I returned to the same store, and the iPhone and iPod touch could now connect. This time, however, the T-Mobile Wi-Fi network still seemed broken—still no gateway page—and iTunes on the PowerBook couldn’t connect, either.

The service allows laptops, iPhones, and the iPod Touch users to connect for free to the iTunes store while sipping lattes without having to pay for for a Hotspot account, which is awesome.

When tapping the WiFi music store icon the store comes up as it usually would, but with an extra Starbucks icon in the lower left side of the screen. Clicking this icon shows content featured at Starbucks retail locations as well as the view for what’s played recently. Again a single click starts the download. The fast WiFi access speeds downloads to you quickly. It is said that most tracks take 15-30 seconds to download to your library, ready for listening and syncing back to iTunes.

Starbucks and Apple have promised to roll out the service nationwide within the year and hopefully this kind of mini-store partnership won’t be limited to Starbucks and we might see many more partnerships in the near future. Having the feature available at concerts could be a huge plus for Apple and artists.

Imagine seeing your favorite band perform a concert, and whipping out an iPhone to buy their albums or even songs from the live performance before heading home… Can’t wait!

  1. Why in the world would I go to Starbuck’s when the only thing I can use their WiFi for is to get to the iTunes online store? I can go across the street to a competing and cheaper coffee shop, get FREE WiFi that allows me to access the iTunes store AND the rest of the web. Why does anyone really care about the Starbuck’s deal. As an iPhone owner I am, yet again, disappointed with Apple and their meager and paltry ‘hand outs’ to those of us who have been loyal Apple fans.
