First Problem with my iPhone

So this is all very timely, after writing an article today called The iPhone is Perfect my iPhone is broken. Not completely broken mind-you, but pretty broken. The issue? I can’t unlock the damn thing. Whenever I try to slide the fancy-smancy multi-touch button nothing happens. It was working until this afternoon. What’s weird is that all other multi-touch works in other applications. Quickly strange is the fact that I can get out of it (most times) but hitting the home button, which circumvents my password and takes me to the home screen. So much for security.

I did try a reset from the Settings menu but I’m thinking maybe I should remove the sim card to do a hard reset? I posted to the Apple discussion board so hopefully that will help. Anyone else out there have an issue like this?

  1. I had the exact same problem and a reset/restart/reboot (holding the sleep and home button for 8 seconds) fixed the problem

  2. restart it by holding the home key and the sleep button until the apple logo appears.

  9. Same here.  The reboot worked.  HOWEVER,

Anybody know what was actually causing this problem and if it’s going to recurr (and maybe get worse) with time?

I’m concerned that maybe there’s a design flaw that will - in time - no longer be fixed by this trick…

  11. Same problem on mine, the reboot worked. First I thought it had something to do with removing the passcode. That’s when it started. But added and then removed the passcode and it still worked. So, anomaly !

  12. I’m having the same issue, only sometimes it takes me three or four reboots in a row to make it work.  This morning, I have tried 15 times, and still nothing.  For day two, this doesn’t seem encouraging.

  13. Randolph,

that doesn’t sound like normal behavior....especially on day two. I would take the phone back in and exchange it asap.

  15. exactly the same here, the reboot made it work. What on earth causes this problem? Should I please my iPhone’s temper?

  16. The reboot worked.  I’m so glad I found this forum.  I was beginning to regret that I had bought the iPhone.

  17. Molly Wood of CNET reported a similar problem with her iPhone after taking it out of her purse to answer a call (see episode 522 of “Buzz Out Loud” at http://chkpt.zdnet.com/chkpt/1pcast.bole.072307/http://podcast-files.cnet.com/podcast/cnetbuzz_072307.mp3 about 10 minutes in). I’m not sure if she resolved her problem. It sounds vaguely reminiscent of problems I had with my old Fingerworks TouchStream keyboard, which supposedly is the technology Apple bought to form the basis of the multi-touch screen for iPhone (see http://crunchgear.com/2007/01/15/multi-touch-technology-and-where-its-going-nextoh-and-apple-didnt-invent-it-either/ ). I live in a dry climate with static electricity problems in the winter, and this would keep gestures and keystokes from registering. The keyboard would also not work if my fingers were wet, or even if a fan was blowing over the keyboard at a high speed (a common problem for me in the summer). Resetting the keyboard would work for a short while, but for all the brilliance of the keyboard I finally gave it up.

However, since the iPhone is used in a much more uncontrolled environment than a desktop keyboard, I’m assuming that Apple long since solved these lingering problems with the original technology. But perhaps Molly Wood’s problems were due to a static charge the iPhone screen picked up from rubbing against things in her purse? That would be consistent with what I saw with my TouchStream keyboard.
