How Many MB is Your iPhone Using?

With all the talk - and complaints - early on about data plans and how much MB they had, and some were offering GB, you’d be forgiven for thinking the iPhone was gunna suck the data just like your home computer does.

My experience, and those of other iPhone owners I’ve met, is distinctly different to that.

I know two other iPhone owners and both use 3G at whim, that is, whenever and wherever necessary. Since Telstra provided the higher data plans for me, I’ve also done the same. We all have wifi at home and we don’t download YouTube videos on the iPhone (I’ve tried and even over wifi it’s painfully slow)

But for all three of us, we are only using 40MB or so a month.

40MB?! That’s nothing! Considering the average phone plan (in Australia) now generously gives ten times that much, you wonder why.

If you’re thinking of signing up for an iPhone, then think again about your data usage, it may be a lot lower than you’d expect.

What are other iPhone users finding?

  1. I have a family plan with my wife on AT&T in the US, which mandates unlimited data as a requirement of the iPhone plan.  On the most recent bill (ending last week) we collectively used 300MB.  I use wireless at home but my wife leaves her wireless off, using just the 3G connection.  We both hop on when ever/where ever we want (why not with unlimited data).  We both download YouTube videos occasionally and I usually get my App updates over the air.

  2. thanks, my2sense. I do my updates either via mac or wifi, so save a lot of MB there.

Am wondering tho, and esp for your wife, how’s your battery life using 3G so much?

Mine’s pretty ordinary, esp since 2.2

  3. I’m on Virgin down under and have found the same thing, my plan is 1G and I use about 40mg a month with email, Google Reader, weather, and stocks.  Ihave since added the TV schedule and a couple of others that require some usage, but am wondering if truly its the only internet access I need? Hmmm
