HTC Fuze the latest iPhone killer? Not a chance.

Posted November 13, 2008 1:42 PM by Chris Seibold

imageIf you look through the specs of the HTC Fuze you’ll see a lot of overlap with the iPhone. Touch screen, tri band communications, decent looks. The Fuze has some features the iPhone lacks: slide out keyboard, ability to edit Microsoft documents 3.2 megapixel camera and a few others. The iPhone one spec sheet advantage: $100 cheaper (and with the Fuze you have to use a coupon). Fro the spec sheets it seems like it would be a fair battle between the two cell phones with a 50/50 split between AT&T users (like the iPhone the Fuze is AT&T only). But it won’t be a fair fight and you cna already tell that the Fuze is going nowhere.

How can you tell?
First: The hype.
You haven’t heard anyone clamoring for the Fuze and the only people that seem mildly excited by the thing are those that generate press releases.

Second: it runs Windows Mobile
Ah, the achilles heal of the Fuze. Windows Mobile is being rejected for both OS X Mobile and the RIMM OS. and both of those are dominated by Symbian used by Nokia. Windows Mobile is in fourth place, at best, and as the number of devices that use Android grows that number could get worse. Windows Mobile might be the best Mobile OS ever but the market doesn’t seem to like it.

Sorry Fuze, you’re not the next iPhone killer you’re just another incremental update.

Read all the specs.

  2. It is cogent argumentation like that that forces me to re evaluate my position. You got the f word in there,  an assertion about my sexuality, a comment about my physical appearance and a suggestion about the proper way to stow my iPhone.
All in all, impossible to defeat logic like that!

  6. yeah i have the fuze and hade the iphone.
The iphone is a great phone but mine broke
it had a dead zone in the screen or something but
i have the fuze now and i like it more. The internet is faster, camera way better and the keyboard along
with the touch screen, you basically do everything on the fuze as you would on the iphone.oh and there isnt multimeadia text on the iphone, when there is on the fuze.

Dont get me wrong the iphone is worth buying it just got old.

  7. is that all you have for an argument? the fuze does everything the iphone does and more including picture messaging for example. the only thing the iphone has on the fuze is a larger screen and maybe a faster starting gps. since everyone is all on the apple train these days most opinions will be to bias to admit the fuze is a great cell.

  8. I did quite some research before settle on Fuze.  I do envy Iphone smooth user interface and the cute dancing icons; however, the slide keyboard in Fuze made up for the lag time in WinMo.

Yes, Iphone is $100 cheaper, but:
    1.  Iphone data plan with Enterprise Sync cost $15 more.  Iphone users are paying $360 more over two years contract than WinMo users just to get email.
    2.  WinMo users can download SEVEN to get internet push email for free.
    3.  Blackberry is launching push email for WinMo.  That gives user another option.
    4.  WinMo 6 comes with impressive Voice Command which activates any application and contact list.  Iphone Voice Dial Software cost $30.
    5.  The are far more GPS software options for WinMo user than Iphone.  Audible turn by turn for google map is available for WinMo for $60 but not for Iphone.

Don’t get me wrong, Iphone is great and it is perfect for vast majority of users.  WinMo offers lots of benefits in compatibility and flexibility for power users.  Iphone commercial show off the music recognition software…Amazing!!!  But the same third party application sits quietly in Fuze; maybe WinMo users have more important things to do.

  9. I recently bought the Fuze, it being my first smart phone ever. I’m beginning to wonder, however if I made the wrong choice? I love my ipod, and I love my mac computer, but the keypad and camera kinda bothers me on the iphone. Plus, I can get an ipod touch and have the best of both worlds. However, the internet on the fuze leaves something to be desired compared to the iPhone. I make music on my computer and send it to my phone, and apparently I could do that on my fuze, but I don’t know how to yet. I heard that you couldn’t do that on the iphone, but I think a lot of what was said came from a lot of at&t employees who really don’t know what they’re talking about and just want to sell a phone.

Your thoughts? I do envy the app store on the iphone, and the zoom, and the fact that it’s not as slow as the iphone.

Can I actually get the music identfier on the fuze without paying a lot of money (or a monthly fee?)
