Huge iPhone Software Update Coming! RUMOR

Posted July 10, 2007 1:00 PM by Gregory Ng
Categories: Rumor Software

There are 2 ways to decipher this headline. The first: there is a rumor going around that there is a huge software update coming to the iPhone. The second: A huge software update better be coming for the iPhone. Either 3way, Here is some details coming froma guy who knows a guy and posted on Howard Forums via PDA Live!

The software update will include:
-A file browser that mimics the new finder in Leopard with CoverFlow
-A special version of iWork so you can view Keynote presentations on the iPhone
-Disk Mode
-Spotlight Search function
-Copy/Paste functionality
-Widescreen keyboard on every application
-Picture sharing
-.mac syncing
-Bonjour like file sharing over Wifi
-New ringtones
-iChat!

In addition, we hear the following insights, “Flash is coming eventually, it’s just a matter of handling it in a way so when i page has dozens of flash apps running at the same time the page doesn’t slow to a crawl, so they have to take the Adobe flash and make some customizations, including for security.

Again, only a rumor but an exciting one at that.

  1. I hope Apple does release an update soon.  I highly doubt the first update will include iChat, but who knows.  The most important things for me on that list are the ringtones and widescreen keyboard for all apps.  A simple update with those two alone would make me happy.  I wouldn’t complain about those other updates either, I am just ready for some ringtones and I want a wider keyboard.

I also really want flash, but I know that is something that will probably take a few months instead of a few weeks.

It would be great if this or any update would come in the next week or two.

  2. oh, i SO hope this is true. steve jobs himself promised “lots of fun stuff” was coming for the iphone, and lots of things on this list would shut up the whiners and nay-sayers.

  3. What about 3G?

Posted by Jason on July 10, 2007 6:04 PM
  4. Jason, from what I have heard including from an employee at AT&T, despite what people think, 3G cannot be solved with a software update, it will have to be a hardware release.

Posted by Gregory Ng on July 10, 2007 6:59 PM
  5. To be honest, this update needs to come by Friday. Many of these features are necessary for a mobile phone’s efficiency and functionality. Plus, if the update doesn’t come before Friday, many people awaiting the update will be returning their phones.

I believe it will hit on Thursday.

  6. Did you ever think that Apple may be waiting to see who the “tried and true” believers are...those who stick with it and not go tossing it back by tomorrow. Then, come out with a small update the first of next week? Just a thought.

Posted by Joe on July 12, 2007 4:47 PM
  7. To be honest, that idea did not even cross my mind because it makes very little sense. Apple’s goal I hope is to create and maintain the best product their abilities allow, regardless of these “tried and true” believers.

  8. I would like to see an option to keep events and tasks on the desktop at all times.  it would also be nice to be able to type in a name or the start of a number to pull up a particular contact.  I have over 3000 in my contact list and would like to have faster access to those I need in a hurry.

Posted by Nancy Wiener on July 13, 2007 9:17 PM
  9. I would also like to see an upgrade to the camera software so you can record video clips.

I would also like to be able to send more than one photo at a time in an email...when you take as many pics as I do that you want to share...it sucks to have to send them one at a time.

  10. I would love to see some additional bluetooth functionality. For instance, I wouldn’t mind the bluetooth File Transfer, Contacts, and Calendar Sync via bluetooth as well.

Although, I find it quite cumbersome when I am about to lock my phone - i accidently touch something on the screen/glass pane and, for instance, call is placed whien I’m in Phone mode - some workaround for that would be awesome.

Posted by Rajesh on July 17, 2007 10:31 AM
  11. One more quick comment - I would love to have Bluetooth interface with an external bluetooth GPS with the appropriate mapping software or Google MAPS - in the near future -

ahhhhh - wishful thinking!! Cheers, Rajesh

Posted by Rajesh on July 17, 2007 10:38 AM
  12. There is a workaround for it.  It would be to not accidentally touch anything on the screen while locking the phone.

  13. Sweet!!!!!!!! they need to hurry up with those updates

  14. Can you believe the iphone (media / entertainment phone) has no ringtones! Also the text message notification sound lasting only two seconds. How am I suppose to hear that in my purse.

For ringtones they should allow us to take a box move it along a song for us to pick the 30 seconds we want to make the ringtone. I mean, golly gee, its itunes. Expect more.

Posted by Lisa on July 20, 2007 12:03 PM
  15. I don’t know about anyone else, but I NEED (Badly) the ability to SMS to multiple recipients.  Where is THAT in the UPDATE Arena?

Posted by thelke on July 20, 2007 4:50 PM
  16. Something that I’ve noticed that bugs the $#|+ out of me...which is happening as I type on the iPhone this instant...i’m in the widescreen mode so the keyboard is bigger...and when I try to navigate through what I’ve types to correct misspelled words...you know with tje magnifying glass thing...it won’t scoll up through the page...i can barely see the cirrent line...forget about going further back I’m my message...sometmes I can if I click done and go back that way...buy that’s a pain and it doesn’t always work.

And what about spell check? As good as this device is at suggesting...it’s not 100%...I left the proof in my message...did you catch them?

Posted by Hay Ray on July 21, 2007 11:39 PM
  17. AND WHAT’S WITH THE PHOTO LIBRARY? Am I the only person that might take some pictures that ONLY I SHOULD SEE? I thought I had figured out a way to make me feel a little better by creating a separate folder for certain pictures to sync up with but come to find out...ALL THE PICTURES ON YOUR PHONE ARE ALL IN THAT LIBRARY FOLDER.  It would be nice to be able to create separate folders and be able to password protect the content.

Oh...and why is it when you type in ALL CAPS...the smart speller correcting thingamaghig doesn’t work?

Posted by Hay Ray on July 21, 2007 11:51 PM
  18. i love the phone, but the fact that picture text is ridiculous. they need to come up w a software update to make this happen

Posted by Jeremy on July 23, 2007 8:36 AM
  19. All those updates would be incredibly nice… Some problems I’ve seen.. No text forwarding which I could live without if I could copy and paste.. I have the 8 gig one but the texts fill up so easily?? My blackberry stored way more. No way to save pictures people send in email. Nor can we send multiple photos. Yea they might do software updates for the camera but no flash cuz thats hardware. And another issue.. I leave the phone charged over night.. I wake up in the morning. No texts. I send 1 and get 3 with previous time stamps?? Go figure.. Hopefully software can help me out.

  20. How about A2DP and AVRCP support for Bluetooth stereo headsets. Hello iPhone, welcome to 2006!?

Posted by Bitboy on July 24, 2007 2:56 PM
  21. Seriously, what happened to personalized ringtones. Are they just gonna give new tones in the update? And yes I would love to send picture sms, send one sms to multiple recipience, record videos, download pictures via emails or the web. It’s not quite a phone, it’s not really a pda, it’s one confused device. Apple help it find its true self.

Posted by knguyen on July 26, 2007 4:45 PM
  22. my friends, we hold the future in our hands.. Sure i wish this phone could get me a beer from the fridge but we can’t have it all. Copy and paste would be key. And the simplest of phones can send pics in text. C’mon apple. Get with the times. This phones the future, how bout some voice recoginition technology.. Just a thought. Everything mentioned in the update is heavenly. Fingers crossed

Posted by will on July 26, 2007 5:13 PM
  23. I have to say that the inability to send mms is aggravating, copy/paste functionality is a must, keyboard widescreen mode in every app, personalized ringtones and host of other things.  I love this phone so hopefully I could get some updates to continue loving it!

Posted by Carlie on July 27, 2007 8:04 PM
  24. There are software programmable and multifunctional radio ICs out there so 3G is a SLIGHT possiblity but I must agree that the chances of it being implemented are slim to none. Most likely it will be on the next model.

Posted by Acidshock on July 28, 2007 10:31 AM
  25. Just three more additions on top of what is planned would make me very happy:
    -text forwarding
    -text draft/template
    -text multiple contacts

  26. the iphone has a 3G sim card once at7t expands the coverage it will switch

Posted by tom on July 30, 2007 8:38 PM
  27. It is possible to send pics via text (mms).  It’s done thru email; you enter the recipients phone number plus an email domain, for example:

    5551212@tmomail.net (for Tmobile accounts)
    5551212@vzwpix.com (for Verizon accounts)
    5551212@mms.att.net (for AT&T accounts)
    5551212@messaging.sprintpcs.com (for Sprint accounts)

It’s not the same simple, easy to do process that has been solid for so many years but the results are the same.

  28. ^^Super. But which service does my friend Julie use again?

Posted by Kent on July 31, 2007 1:25 PM
  29. The 3G on the SIM card is simply a stamp that is on all new AT&T SIM cards. Activating 3G...unfortunatly is not as simple as flipping a switch...it requires a UMTS or HSDPA radio...neither of which the iPhone currently is equipped with...future generation models may get this upgrade...but current models would require a hardware upgrade...not software.

  30. Well, I have just had iTunes synch with my iPhone after a very quick download and restart of the iPhone, and do not see anything new on the machine, everything works as before.

Perhaps this is just to address the security vulnarabilities and the twice ‘frozen’ iPhone that required the two button hard reset so far in the month that I have had the beastie.

Posted by Geoff Leigh on August 1, 2007 3:20 PM
  31. That is precisely what it was for. If you had your phone hacked, then it did a full restore as well, but you can re-hack it after and all seems well.

Posted by thelke on August 1, 2007 4:35 PM
  32. Ok...I LOVE my Iphone.  But we gotta have some software updates that are cool.  I mean isn’t that what Apple is all about?  We have got to be able to get MP3 ringtones.  Frankly the standard ringtones are S#!T.  You can’t hear a damn one of them.  Not to mention the message tones.  Also.  There is no way to save pictures emailed to me.  I can view them on email, but then they are gone unless I keep the email forever. C’mon guys.  Next, how about multiple sms messaging recipients and maybe MMS at all. I used to get picture msging all the time from friends.  Now they’ve stopped because it is too much trouble to go to a computer, download the picture, then email it to me...again...c’mon guys.  Hey, and how about some games.  Let’s get, I dunno maybe even just ONE?!  And Steve, no offence but, “full internet in your pocket” my ass.  With no Flash you lose a ton of internet experience.  Also, how about maybe being able to save images viewed online?  OK I really DO love this phone and I wouldn’t trade it for any other, but please give us some more functionality… emphasis on the FUN.

Posted by Johnboi on August 4, 2007 7:57 PM
  33. i would really like it if u guys maybe put in flash so the internet would be much better, and then maybe using MP3 songs as ringtones, some GAMEEESSS, video recording, picture messaging, MMS, instant messaging..... C’mon you guys are APPLE and i know you can do better than this. The phone is great and i cant wait till the software update so please make it worth my while.

  34. you can easily add folder to the photo gallery. just make folder in iphoto and sync up.

Posted by ntrmind on August 16, 2007 4:33 PM
  35. There are two web apps that i know of that support an iChat-like feature and have worked fine so far.  iphone.beejive.com and flickim.com Just log onto these while on your iPhone, type in your sn and password, and connect.

Posted by CBP on August 16, 2007 9:49 PM
  36. oh my god people, no ringtones, NO RINGTONES, ARE YOU SERIOUS!!!! What the fuck am i going to do???!?!!??! I am sorry, I got the iphone for more important reasons than to hear 30 sec. of a damn song when friends are calling.

    Posted by pbzepln07 on August 20, 2007 8:51 AM
  37. Oh really, you have it for more important reasons… You must be a very important person (or a dumba$$)!
We would like to hear 1 good reason you bought a $650 phone that has less features, & is less productive than my $175 phone that I pay $32 a month for 650 minutes (thanks to corporate discounts that you can’t have, and have to forfeit on the iPhone plan).

    Cingular 8525 biatch!

    Posted by SBBrian805 on August 21, 2007 5:26 PM
  38. SBBrian805,

First of all why are you on an iphone update article to talk about your 8525? Then why are you worried what we paid for our iPhone? And then telling us what you paid? Chances are nobody thats here cares. Congrats you bought a windows based phone with a slide out keyboard and stylus. I always wanted a phone that worked like my windows computer does. All and all SBBrian805 you can pick apart anything and say it sucks.. but i suggest doing it at an 8525 blog or somebodies myspace.

Heres some good reasons why i got the iphone.

7.22 Gigs (after OS) of music and videos
    3.5” screen
    Everything done by your fingers
    FULLY Updateable
    Based on OS X
    Nice looking, thin design
Has MOST not all, maybe soon, of the features I want.

  39. If you haven’t already RETURN YOUR IPHONE, RETURN IT NOW!

If you received a defective phone like I did, do not exchange it for another!  GO TO AN APPLE STORE AND DEMAND YOUR MONEY BACK!  Apple and AT&T need to take a loss on this release so that they can learn to NEVER RELEASE A PRODUCT B4 IT IS READY.  NEVER HIDE SPECS & POTENTIAL RESTRICTIONS BEHIND VAUGE HYPE ON ANY PRODUCT BEFORE THEY LAUNCH.  OR HIDE BEHIND A RESTOCKING FEE & A 15 DAY RETURN POLICY.  If apple believed they had a superior product they wouldn’t have hid behind a restocking fee & given customers a normal 30 day return.

I can’t believe that Apple & AT&T would be so underhanded and sell you a locked retail phone that performs below all simple phone standards.  What’s next is Apple going to lock my MACBOOK to my broadband provider!

Apple is the biggest sellout I know; they sold their soul to the devil (AT&T).

I will not buy a iPhone until the phone is unlocked or unlockable, they release the SDK for third party apps, and they support 3G

    Posted by SBBrian805 on August 21, 2007 6:06 PM
  40. Well, I took the iPhone to China, and in Tianjin, Shanghai I got spotty China Mobile reception - but I did receive my calls.  Could not get Visual Voicemail, and no Broadband wireless other than when I was in a free wifi area or a hotspot where I knew the access password.

Other than that, Beijing worked fine all around - except again no broadband other than wifi.  So the iPhone travels well, and after the software upgrade I have never had a frozen phone anymore - and it was cool taking and sharing the photos of the places and people that I visited.

Posted by Geoff Leigh on August 28, 2007 12:05 PM
  41. About the .mp3 ring tones, is that not something that will never be enabled because of various copyright laws violations etc. that apple is not willing to meddle with? I just think it’s ridiculous to not enable purchased music to be used as ringtones. If the files originated from iTunes, then the licensing fees have been accounted for, everything should be square, and now you can use your paid fo songs as your ring tones. is noone at Apple accounting for that? drives me crazy thinking about it.

also, are the things that are seen as issues, by everyone on this thread, or from Engadget’s review (which I think is the most comprehensive by far) as things that can be remedied with software updates?

Posted by Andrew Hines on September 2, 2007 3:23 AM
  42. LOL,
Now it seems that Apple wants to get out of the Cell Phone business.  They no longer make the 4gig iPhone, they are trying to get rid of all their 8gig iPhones by lowering the price $200, and they sold the iPhone patents to Nokia.  I guess the future iPhone killer, or the 2nd Gen iPhone will come from Nokia and fare well to OSX and hello Symbian.

    LOL No regrets now…
    Suckers!

    Posted by SBBrian805 on September 6, 2007 5:04 PM
  43. So because they want to sell more devices there giving up on the phone biz. That makes absolutely no since. You have any clue what your talking about? I like your other posts. First you say you have and 8525 and we are idiots. Then you say you had one then took it back. Because of something that apple didnt hide, if you read the receipt and asked the apple people they knew. The phone was locked. Most in the U.S. are. And what are you talking about selling patents to nokia? How many computer giants like apple do you know throwing away the over 200 patents on one of the most hyped devices ever. The only suckers are the ones who believe the stuff you put on here.
