iPhone firmware 2.0 unlocked three months before its release

Okay, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t totally expecting the iPhone Dev team to crack Apple’s latest firmware update before it was released. But I was expecting it to be hacked a few days before the release, not three months! The iPhone Dev team had to jump through quite a few loopholes to accomplish this. First, there was the problem of obtaining the firmware itself. With no clear way to download the firmware online, the team must have had an inside source from Apple who had access to the firmware beta. Second, they had to hack the firmware itself. I’m going to assume this was the easier half, since Apple probably planned on introducing more advanced anti-hacking methods later on in the development period. The Dev community is probably going to pull a 1.1.3 on us, though, and only release the hack after they’re sure Apple can’t do anything to fix it.

We leave you with this totally awesome quote from the Dev team (via Gizmodo): “the hacked 1.2 firmware works with anything. AT&T and others, it’s pwned. And Apple will not really be able to patch it this time… somehow grin
