iPhone gets handwriting recognition

The iPhone’s touch screen interface is revolutionary, but we’ll be the first to admit that firing off a text message or email using the pop-up keyboard can be slow and decidedly un-intuitive. If you long for the days of the Palm Graffiti system, a Chinese developer may have the answer to your problem. A new program, called HWPen, can be loaded using Installer.app and recognizes Latin characters (for languages such as English, French, etc.) as well as Chinese characters. We gave HWPen a shot, and though it’s an interesting concept, it’s still a far cry from being a true handwriting recognition software. To its credit, the biggest hindrance is the lack of a true stylus. To try HWPen on your iPhone, add “http://iphonecake.com/src/new” as a source in your Installer.app.
