Unlike their Chinese brethren, Indians will soon have the option of buying an iPhone legally, and forgoing the difficult process of purchasing an iPhone abroad and unlocking it for use in their country. According to Apple retail sources in India, the 8GB version of the iPhone will soon be released in India, with a target price of Rs 28,000. An Apple source clarified the details: “The carrier deal for India is being worked out with Vodafone. Vodafone could also become the carrier for the Australian market once iPhone is launched there, though more than one carrier is likely for Australia.”

  1. The poor Indian consumer will be taken for a ride since APPLE will be selling the 2.5G version of iPhone at double the US retail price.

Is APPLE trying to dump unsold inventory on India and make a profit out of it?

  2. Rs 28000 is like $700. who says iphone is available in US for half the price. Here you are forced to sign up for a 2 yr AT&T plan and AT&T pays around $300 over a period of 2 years to Apple in exchange for being the exclusive carrier for iphone. And then you pay around $400 (was $600 at launch time but reduced in 2 months) upfront when you buy, so i would say the price is fair.
However we are hearing that AT&T is now renegotiating the price it pays to Apple over 2 yrs and might offer new subscribers the phone for $200 only which would bring its price to $500.
Apple should launch the 3G phone in india too and i guess it would.
