iPhone SIM Card-Like Slot CONFIRMED
Notice I say SIM card-like. iPhone Alley is confirming that based on pictures they took at Macworld in January of the iphone, it does indeed have a SIM card tray. According ot their post today:
Upon closer inspection of pictures the that we have personally taken of the iPhone in January, it seems that there is in fact a very slim SIM card “tray” at the top of the phone. From what we can tell, this would come out in the same way a battery for the Apple Remote does by pushing into a small hole and having the tray pop up holding the SIM card.
Sounds pretty convincing to me. And the iPhone (and hackers for that matter) would benefit from having SIM card accessibility in the iPhone. But, like the title of this post, the only thing we can confirm is the iphone has a SIM card-like slot on it. What do you think? Are the pictures enough to convince you?

Wasn’t this already confirmed back in Steve’s Keynote?
-
Alan - after sifting through literally hundreds of posts one thing I’ve noticed is all the Apple-hating. Posts are recycled over and over, and all of the little details that people missed during Steve’s keynote is what people are writing about missing from the iPhone.
The fact is - all the Windows sheep are completely at a loss why their heroes continue to flounder with 80% of the marketshare.
But the best part is - that people are opening their eyes to the concept that products should work the way they are intended and not be conduits for endless upgrades, add-ons and downloads at nickel and dime fees.

Yeah it was confirmed. Someone wasted lots of time on that report.

So the news here is that there is now an actual slot for such a tray, whereas before it was announced even though no such slot was ever seen on the phone?

Steve specifically mentioned the slot during the January keynote. And showed a picture of it.

Guys, I think the point is with all the rumors going on about no SIM card access/locked phones, etc, the dudes at iPhone Alley wanted to shed some light.
Did Jobs say it in the keynote? Sure. Do people still get worked up at the possibility it changed. Absolutely.
Take the 2 year agreement thing. First the commercials said it. Now they don’t. People don’t know whats what.

Maybe I’m a bit naive about cellphone technology, but…
1. iPhone will work on AT&T (aka Cingular, aka AT&T Wireless).
2. AT&T only operates a GSM network.
3. “The use of SIM card is mandatory in the GSM world.” (Wikipedia--I know, not the be-all, end-all, but it’s better than a sharp stick in the eye, and I’m open to hearing from a different expert).QED, for a phone to operate on AT&T’s network, it must have a SIM card, and thus a slot for said SIM card.
Why the confusion?

@7.
Because the fact that it works on a SIM card doesnt mean the SIM card is accessible to the user, which would change the game completely. Computers need video cards to render video but on Apple laptops they’re WELDED to the logic board and not replaceable-- this could have been the case for a SIM card, since Apple is locking you down to AT&T anyway.. But, as someone pointed out, Steve himself said it is.
