iPhone Updates Being Triggered By Set Dates Or Even EDGE? Maybe!
Excited about Apple’s newest announcements such as iLife, iWork, the iMac and Mac Mini? Well maybe if you’re a Mac user as this was a Mac oriented event, Apple said so themselves. So where does that leave you lonely iPhone user? let us know by publishing your glee to a .Mac web gallery from your iPhone.
Odd isn’t it? You’d think that Apple would do more with the significant abomination that is .Mac besides integrate tools that make similar web based services cry in shame. While I could go into detail on how badly .Mac is and how they should either make it free or kill it now there is one update worth noting for iPhone users.
No, not that useless publish to gallery function but rather how did it get onto your iPhone in the first place? Didn’t see that coming now did you? Apparently this update is either triggered by time release Software included in the 1.0.1 update or even via EDGE itself.
While it seems you need a .Mac email address to take advantage of this feature it is Interesting to see this happen and we are currently trying to confirm if this update was pushed from EDGE or time released.

Does it load the button on if you don’t have a .mac account or is it smart enough to know if you don’t have one?
I do not have a .mac account and after updating my iPhone, my photo app still does not have this feature listed.

Why are you so grouchy about .mac? I’ve been using it for the last couple years to synch computers in different locations and share files and I like it a lot.

@Greg, it’s a .Mac only feature, you have to have a .Mac email associated to the account you want to use on your iPhone.

I know that. the question I have is whether it loads the button on my iPhone independent of knowing whether i have a .mac account or not. If Apple was smart, they would do that and then if you clicked it without a .mac account, they would try to sell the service to you.
The reason I ask, is I still have not seen the button on my iPhone and people have remarked that it it did not happen to everyone’s phones all at once.

G, It didn’t show up for me until I rebooted the phone.

I have only ever used the trial of .mac. I did enjoy it and I love some of the new features, but refuse to pay $100 for it. I wish Apple would either lower the price or allow for a monthly fee for use. A lot of people might use it for a few months and then not want it any longer. Apple should want those people to buy for a few months instead of not buying at all because they are unsure of how much they will use. I think they would make a lot more money off .mac if they charged a simple $9.99 fee per month with an option for a whole year at $99.99. I do think that yesterdays presentation shows that Jobs is planning on incorporating as many Mac applications as possible with iPhone. It should be interesting to see what else comes in the future.
As far as the addition of a simple button on the phone over edge or whatever, I don’t think it is a big deal. It isn’t like they will add any real new software over edge or anything like that.

Pretty funny - I was looking for an iPhone update after 1.01. Guess I should have actually tried to use the feature. Now I just need iLife ‘08 to arrive so I can create some galleries. IMO this is a brilliant attempt to get all of those iPhone buyers to switch to Macs and OS X so they get all of the joy that is iLife.
