iTunes 8 Causes Blue Screen of Death for iPhone Users {UPDATE}

Steve promised a lot of cool new features with iTunes 8, but Windows Vista users that upgraded to the new version were in for an unpleasant surprise.

Users on the Apple Discussions running the latest iTunes in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions are reporting getting nothing less then the blue screen of death each time they plug in their iPhone or iPod.

It appears that the only fix for this is to downgrade back to version 7.7, which causes some minor bugs that involve apps getting erased.

Gizmodo states “Apple’s asking for dump files to figure out where the problem’s coming from, but until they post an update, I predict rioting! Mayhem! Pillaging of Apple stores all around the country! Or just a bunch of Windows-based iTunes users grumbling into the night about how all the fancy schmancy graphics in the world can’t make up for crappy software testing.”

Since I have downloaded to iTunes 8, I have yet to get the BSOD when connecting my iPhone, but I have experienced a “runtime error” which closes iTunes 8 (sometimes) when I connect my iPhone.

Hopefully these problems will be corrected via an update soon.

UPDATE

Apple has in fact, posted a solution for Vista users. Apple has released an official fix for the blue screen of death issue that Windows Vista users have been having when plugging an iPhone or iPod into iTunes 8. Support article TS2280 titled “iTunes 8: If Windows Vista displays a blue screen error message when connecting iPhone or iPod”

The symptoms they list are “seeing a blue screen error message when connecting iPhone or iPod to a Windows Vista computer. In some cases, the computer may immediately restart when connecting iPhone or iPod to the computer.” Get the full instructions here. If that doesn’t work, they recommend trying support article TS1502 for another solution.

  1. OK, just downloaded and installed iTunes 8, and unfortunately read this just a moment too late. Don’t yet know if I’m gonna crash but I also don’t know how to downgrade iTunes. Any ideas?

  2. Well, I jumped the gun. No problems with my install. I did run across some information pointing a finger at HP printers, which I don’t have.

  3. I now get the blue screen immediately upon putting my 3G into a legacy ipod dock, which worked prior to the iTunes 8 upgrade.

  4. I’ve upgraded but the only thing I noticed was Asian symbols next to my iPhones name, which was a bit weird. Other than that all good.

  5. I noticed those symbols myself. I wonder what that is about…

  6. After installing iTunes 8.0 on my Vista machine I would get BSOD every time I docked my iPhone. Unplugging my HP printer USB cable prevents it from happening. Possibly a conflict with the new USB drivers from Apple in iTunes8.0 and HP USB drivers.

  7. I got a BSOD when I tried to sync my Touch after installing iTunes 8.  My PC would try to install a new mobile device driver and then blue-screen. I ended up unplugging my HP printer and then the Touch synced just fine. Doesn’t Apple test their products before they release them?

  8. When I connected my iPhone 3g I got the BSOD, and tried fruitlessly to get it to work. Then I unplugged my HP printer from my computer and no BSOD.

  9. I’m actually getting the blue screen under Windows XP, SP3, as well! This wasn’t happening under the previous firmware (2.0.2) and previous version of iTunes.

Also, for some reason, my iPhone is now recognized by Windows as a ‘Still Image Camera’ (or smth like this).

    Damn….

  10. I have the same problem, since i upgraded (or degraded may i say) itunes as soon as I connected any usb item (memory sticks, sd, camera, etc)  to my notebook (pavillion dv 2635, os vista 64 b) the system was blocked or presented the blue screen… I’ve discovered that if i connect any usb item incluiding the ipod video 30 G during the very start of windows it syncs apparently well, the podcst got syncronized but the music (play counter) didnīt…
A real shame for apple… I was thinking in buying an ipod touch… now iīm not so sure… the itunes upgrade cost me a brand new notebook from working fine to be a mess…
ADD: I can use my usb ports ONLY in the secure mode of windows…hope that helps to find wich application is conflicting those ports—-

  18. Advantage on that accessories is that its reduces time and you need not ink for this. Its fine Professor Ink.
But specially in the formal sector still needed the ink for printing.
