Matte Case Was Leak Possible iPhone Design?
Apple recently released the iphone 3GS during it’s keynote Monday but one of the bigger questions was how believable many of the rumors picked up by the blog-o-sphere were. One such rumor, a matte case replacing the glossy plastic backing of the current iphone was not only speculated but leaked through pictures. However, Apple chose to keep the current design of the iphone 3G.
While we weren’t treated to a new redesign, the underlying Hardware was upgraded with a speedier CPU and double the RAM. That still leaves the mystery of what happened to the matte backing we saw on leaked images of the 3rd generation iphone wide open. Macrumors points out that it could have been a possible design route for Apple as the FCC ID numbers on the matte case and iphone 3GS match up.
Apple could release an incremental update to the iphone with the new enclosure as the matte backing contains the FCC ID a1303 while the 3GS has the ID number bCGA1303A indicating some kind of close correlation.

I worked for apple as a developer for 2 years and Matte Finish is a vinyl/plastic that we use for our internal prototypes before mass production.
