Mr. Jobs Loves iPhone Users… iPod Touch? Not So Much.

Posted March 6, 2008 6:18 PM by Don Palmigiano

imageToday was a great day! Steve gave us our first look at the iPhone SDK and a look at some new features that will be coming with Firmware 2.0. Our iPhone community gets all of this for free. But what about the Touch Community? The Touch has a very similar architecture to the iPhone, so it will be getting the same update. The only difference is the price. iPhone users get the update for free, while Touch users will have to pay a “minimal price.” This price will probably be similar to the $20 for the app package.

Steve must love iPhone users more. Yes, that must be it. Or maybe all of these paid updates will offset the price difference between the two multi-touch brothers. What do you think?

I feel sorry for all the Touch owners who made fun of my iPhone. Oh Wait! No I don’t! Haha. Though in all sincerity, I do feel some empathy because of the $200 price drop that I suffered through.

I am glad I bought an iPhone! Jobs takes care of me. How bout you?

  1. this is done purely from an accounting situation
apple has to account legally in this manner
the iPhone has a re-occuring revenue with at&t
    the itouch does not
the difference is done for the government and taxes and stock
this was institued to keep all ducks in an amazing row
    it is in Steve’s interest
    And thus ours

  2. In that case, I hope they charge the lowest possible amount. Will $1.99 do?

  3. I agree with David, Apple makes a percentage of what we pay every month for our phone bills, iPod Touch owners pay once and Apple doesn’t get anything else from them. Geez most of us spent $500 for our iPhones, the least they can do is give us free major updates.

  4. Well when you factor in that The Steve isn’t going to block VoIP and all the benefits of the iPhone minus ATT. I’m cool with coughing up $20. It’s saved me hundreds avoiding the 2yr contract. smile

  5. God, the commentary on iPhone matter is as vapid and whiny as Apple Matters.

Because you bought your Mac 3 years ago, does that mean you get iLife ‘08 for free because your Mac came with iLife ‘06?

New applications for the iPod touch = new applications for the Mac

And FOR THE LAST TIME, Apple accounts for iPhone revenue ON A SUBSCRIPTION BASIS. When you buy that iPhone for $399, they don’t record a sale of $399 - the books spread that $400 over 24 months.

And because you are “subscribing” to the iPhone, Apple can legally release major software updates for free.

As for the Touch software updates being $20 and not $1.99, it’s the same reason Apple doesn’t price iLife at $79 instead of $9. Get used to it, or if you don’t like it, don’t buy it! But enough with the whiny, vapid commentary!

  6. Steve even explained this in the presentation… he said that because they account for the iPod touch differently there will have to be a change for the 2.0 update. Just like there was for the 1.1.3 update. Did you watch the presentation?

  8. Oh, so that explains why Apple charged $20 for iPod 5G users to get the update allowing them to play games.

    Oh…Wait…

Incidentally, if Apple had not wanted iPod touch users to get angry at having to pay for updates, they should have made the fact we were going to have to pay clear before they released it, not several months into it’s life cycle.

  9. @ Paul Douglas:

Apple never advertised the fact there would be updates to the functionality of the iPod touch. Do you buy a 1000 Watt vacuum cleaner and get pissed off if there surprisingly comes the offer to upgrade it to 1500 Watt for 20$?

  10. @Udo: First, actually they did. The SDK Open Letter specifically mentioned that 3rd Party Apps would come to iPod touch. Second, Apple had already set a precedent for iPods being updated free. It was entirely reasonable to assume the touch would be too.

  11. @ Paul Douglas:

    > SDK Open Letter specifically mentioned

But it wasn’t advertised when you bought the touch.

    > precedent for iPods being updated free

Wasn’t that when Apple got in trouble? I only remember that they first cited Sarbanes-Oxley for the 802.11n update for wlan-cards in Core 2 Duo Macintoshs. Before that some shareholder got pissed off by a free update for something ...

  12. Sorry, but publicly released materials count. It was on their site, I read it.

As tot he other thing, never heard anything about that, but possibly.
