imageA new Beta of the upcoming 3.0 Firmware was recently seeded to developers but under the bug fixes is a few notable MobileMe features.

MobileMe has always been billed as Apple’s system for unifying data between the iPhone, iPod Touch, Macs and Windows PC so these small additions make MobileMe on the iPhone that much better. first off, if you sync data between iTunes and your iPhone then enable MobileMe, instead of completely wiping down your data to start over, you will be prompted to merge you data between MobileMe and your iPhone. In addition to the rumored MobileMe video upload feature, you will be able to publish pictures and other media to the service so you can share it with your friends.

  1. It’ll be interesting how well the data merge feature works.  I think the sync is working very well right now.  No issues and I have two Vista systems, and three Macs I sync.  Even though I rarely boot into Vista, when I need to, it all syncs up.  It was not possible to achieve this level of reliability last summer.  I’ve also moved completely to MM email, off Gmail.  It’s been flawless for over a month now.  I kind of like a clean slate sometimes though, so I hope I can wipe the data and pull a fresh set from the cloud.

  2. Big problem with wipe rather than merge is that the contact data looses it’s rigngtones. Therefore, if you set a ringtone to a specific contact (very handy as we all know) then MM wipes all of that back to default every times it syncs. For this reason I use the old cable manual system for syncing contacts rather than via the ‘cloud’.

By the way… when are they going to sort-out the crazy inability to select which calendars sync and also the ability to sync subscribed calendars… oh, and accept an appointment via email within the phone????... come on Apple.
