New iPhone for Christmas? Five Free Apps to get you Started
So you rolled out of bed this morning and discovered an iPhone waiting for you under the tree. You’re feeling pretty lucky! No surprise really, who wouldn’t feel great after getting a brand new iPhone!
But a new gadget means a learning curve. Learning to type will take a few days, discovering all the hidden stuff on the iPhone will take even longer. You don’t want to wait for all that, heck no you want to get going right away. The best place to start? The App Store. But you don’t want to jump in with both feet and start downloading paid apps right away instead you’ll want to download some free apps to see how the process works, what happens in iTunes and what changes on your iPhone.
But which free apps should you grab? It is a great question. Some free apps are great and others are, well, an example of the old adage “you get what you pay for.”
All that out of the way here are five great free apps to get your iPhone enhanced life started. To folks that are hard core app fanatics (Jovan Washington and Chris Howard) there are no surprises. On the other hand, if you’re new to the iPhone, these apps will open your eyes to what the iPhone can do.
Shazam
You hear a song on the radio, at a bar, whatever. Fire up Shazam and let the app listen for a few seconds via the microphone on your iPhone and Shazam will tell you what song you’re hearing.
Google Mobile
Fire up this app and tell your iPhone what you’re looking for. Seconds later you’ll have amazingly accurate results.
Remote
Control iTunes on your from your iPhone. Grab a pair of Depends and you won’t have to get off the couch for days.
Twitteriffic
All your Twittery goodness in an app for the iPhone. Have fun, everyone wants to know that you are currently unfolding wrapping paper for use next year.
Light
Turns your iPhone’s screen white. The iPhone screen then becomes a flashlight. Sure it is a week flashlight but the app can come in really handy.
Happy Holidays, Merry Christmas and all that. Now get busy having fun with that iPhone!

My favorite free app is Stanza, a nice ebook reader. *All* classics are available for free wireless download through Project Guttenburg. You can also buy current books or turn documents on your computer into ebooks which you can wirelessly download.

Mr Seibold obviously hit the egg not pretty hard, because he forgot the most important thing you can get to go with your iPhone: a free lifetime subscription to iPhone Matters.
And that’s as easy as downloading NetNewsWire, a great free rss newsreader for the iPhone, and then adding iPhone Matters to your subscriptions.
