Problems with the iPhone 3G…

imageThere are many new problems, both hardware and software related, with the iPhone 3G. Here are some problems that bothered me enough that I remembered them. This was actually written on the iPhone 3G, so if you see improper words blame the not always accurate auto-correct, which happens to have been a problem from the very beginning. Haha.

The Temperature:

During the first 20 minutes of use, I noticed one big difference between the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G. The iPhone 3G felt about 5 times as hot as the original. Perhaps it was because of the aluminum backing that the iPhone could dissipate the heat. Or maybe the new 3G HSDPA chip and GPS chip made the phone run hot. Either way, the new phone can sometimes get too hot for comfort, which is a feature not needed in the dead heat of the southern Californian sun.

Yellow Screen:

What is up with this? Apparently this was a deliberate feature to make the phone more warm feeling and natural. I even tried the full restore to no avail.  The thing I liked about the original iPhone was that it had a nice blue colored screen. A relaxing blue compared to a hot distorting yellow. I liked my old screen more. Sadly it feels as if this screen is really cheap. Something tells me Apple sacrificed the screen to make the price.

The Border Around The Screen:

This may not bother many, but when I look to the edges of my phone I now see a border that never used to be there. The original iPhone looked very streamlined and advanced because the screen took up most of the face. With the 3G, the screen stops about a centimeter short of the edge giving the phone a plastic look. Did they make the screen smaller? Did they keep the resolution (160 dpi)?

Reminiscent Of The iPod Touch:

Going along with the smaller screen and plastic look, the iPhone 3G feels more like an iPod touch. This is not a good thing. I enjoyed the class of the original iPhone over the slimness of the iPod touch.

Too Smudgy:

Simply put: I love the way the phone looks… Before I have held it. After that the smudges make the phone a mess. Try showing off your phone without wiping it off. Record the recipient’s reaction.

The Vibrate Function Feels A Lot Cheaper, More Crappy.

I do not know what else to say, the vibrate function feels very cheap. It is more high-pitched and less noticeable.

Firmware 2.0:

I hate applications asking me if it is okay to know where I am.
Seriously Apple needs to add a function to settings that will allow any application to use your location without the need to ask. It is getting annoying.

Speaker Gets Covered By My Pinky:

This is strictly because of the way I hold the phone. Because the speaker has a more focused opening (one hole vs. many) it lends itself to being covered.

Inconsistent Coverage:

Maybe it is just my phone, but my iPhone continuously shows 0 bars, and then jumps back to 5 bars. While the phone shows 0 bars it still gets perfect coverage. Maybe I should have this one checked out.

Stay tuned for the next post which outlines the many features I enjoyed about the new iPhone.

  1. the yellow color on the phone looks a lot closer to the d65 white point used by many (most?) visual arts types then the old bluer color. Before you get to down on it i’d be interested to know if you computer monitor has been calibrated with a hardware calibrator.

“Before you get too down on it”
That’s Job-one here at iPhoneMatters. That’s what Microsoft pays these creeps to do.

  3. No it has not been calibrated, but this would be a matter of opinion more than anything else. The calibration of my hardware is irrelevant. You do have a good point, but blue is my style.

As for Zato: Ah, ya caught me!

  4. The new iPhone 3G is a hit and a miss. Call it what you want, I hate the new screen. I love the feel of the phone, the GPS is nice, the app store is a tremendous disappointment, and the phone is SLOW in loading EVERYTHING. Knowing what I know now, I would stay with my $599 original 8gig iPhone. Oh yes, it does run MUCH hotter. Setting the phone to NEVER auto-lock and using the map function to track a trip turns my iPhone 3G into a hand warmer, not so nice in July, maybe as asset in January. My score on a scale of 1-100 is a 68. My original iPhone scored a 90, now calibrated and re-evaluated a year later to a solid 80.

  5. Every time I take a picture I’m asked if I want to localize it. No, dammit, a 1000 times no. Stop asking.

  6. Totally agree.  Screen is brutal.  I don’t care what Apple says about trying to make it ‘warmer.’ I don’t buy it.  They’ve no doubt got a cheaper screen on there, and my guess is they’ve tried to cover their tracks by skewing the white balance and making it brighter.  The screen on the 1st iphone is epic.  This new one doesn’t hold a candle to it.  Dark colors wash out.. people are red/’yellow.  I guess this is what happens when you mass produce and try to take over the world.  Quality goes out the door.
