RUMOR: Apple to Sell Nintendo Games for iPhone Via iTunes Store

Rumor, rumor, rumor. Did I mention this was a rumor? NoHeat.com is reporting that Nintendo and Apple have teamed up and Nintendo games made for the iPhone will be available to purchase on the iTunes store for $29 each.

Given that there is no reliable source to this news, there is a huge difference between what I want to say and what I should say:

What I should say: “This is a rumor and I won’t believe it until I see it.”
What I want to say: “Aww Yeah! That pwns.”

When asked whether selling games on the iTunes store would cut into sales of the Nintendo DS:

Asked anonymously whether or not these games would cut into Nintendo DS sales, we heard a resounding no. The logic is that because the licensed games will be exclusive and cater to an older audience they should not intrude into Nintendo’s existing markets. The one thing Nintendo does worry about is their amount of control of Apple. While not developing a cell phone internally has its advantages, giving up control of platform has not historically been a practice Nintendo has taken.

This will no doubt add some much needed legitimacy to the idea of Apple and gaming. Could this also mean Nintendo games for the iPod?

  1. “Aww yeah”

My sentiments exactly. And if it’s true, maybe Apple will put iTunes on Wii. We can dream, right?

Do remember, Nintendo holds a patent on touch screen games with multiple touch inputs (Multi-Touch games basically). Adds some weight, though I think the patent itself may in fact only refer to a DS-style device (Two screens and conventional butts in addition to the touch screen), but it’s worth thinking about.

  2. Why would Nintendo cannibalize their own profits, in losing hardware sales?

The iphone is still unproven, with a price tag which says PS3 written all over it.

  3. Nintendo currently sells legacy titles like Super Mario Brothers on the Wii for around $5. Selling the same title for $29 on iTunes will only help profits.
