Run Full Screen Web Apps Without Safari Wrapper

An extremely cool new feature (for me) that Apple did not mention, has been found in the latest iPhone software update (2.1).

An AppleInsider reader discovered that a feature in the latest 2.1 software update creates the ability to launch properly formatted web applications in full-screen mode without the Safari wrapper, making it appear as though it is a native app.

The new feature requires the web developer to add a special piece of code that enables full-screen mode. To view a demo app in full-screen mode, this is what you’ll need to do:

-load the demo app in Mobile Safari on your iPhone located here
-Hit the “+” button at the bottom of Safari
-Select “Add to Home Screen”
-Save the App to the Home Screen
-Tap the icon that was just saved to your Home Screen

Voila! The app should now start in full-screen mode. The only difference now is that you’ll notice a web app will run slower since it is not an installed application and loads graphics from the web. Pretty cool though, eh?

  1. There is actually a way to force any web app to run in full screen using a JavaScript bookmarklet. See here:
