SKype’s VoIP Features Work Over 3G In Firmware 3.0
Skype’s arrival in the App Store early Tuesday has been met with much praise now that a real VoIP App is finally available for the iPhone. Unfortunately, one of the key features that makes Skype so great, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), failed to work over an active 3G connection and was restricted to a Wi-Fi connection. However, 3G connections are supported in the latest Beta version of the iPhone Firmware.
Firmware 3.0 is currently being Beta tested by developers and will arrive sometime this summer but already it’s throwing up surprises. When running Skype on Firmware 3.0, VoIP calls can be made over a 3G connection which goes against Apple’s commitment to cellular carriers that iPhone Apps will not hog their traffic. It will be interesting to see if this loophole makes it to the final release of Firmware 3.0.

Not to be too picky, BUT:
To say that there has not been a ‘real’ VOIP app available so far is wide of the mark. Truphone has been available almost from the start and is technically superior (in my experience) to the Skype product in both features and performance. It can also route calls through the 3G network which, although not exactly equivalent to free calls over an unlimited data plan, is quite cheap when used to make international calls.
There has also been Fring, which has been able to make Skype calls for ages ove WiFi, and is again a better product than Skype iPhone as it presently stands (it doesn’t dump you onto the number/symbol screen when you IM every time and it uses more lines of visible text so you can see what you’ve typed).
The real drawback to all of these products is that you have to have the program running to make and receive calls, which is something that the push-notification should be able to sort out.

Not to be too picky, Steven, BUT:
Truphone, and this is as per the majority of users, has been nothing short of crap. I found it to not have the audio quality that Skype has, but more importantly, it’s far more expensive.
Fring is certainly better than Truphone, but again, I find Skype has better audio quality. There’s nothing to back that up though. App Store reviews have been 50/50 on this.
However, you’re right in a way. If Skype is a ‘real’ VoIP app, then there’s no reason Truphone and Fring can’t be either. I think a ‘real’ VoIP app will be one that can work over 3G and at the moment none of them can do that.
Skype have definitely got issues with the current build. I haven’t had any issues with it, but I hear that many have. Given this is the first version of it, that VoIP is a possibility in 3.0, that Skype have many bells and whistles that they’ve yet to integrate into this build, and that they’re the leaders in this field, you could almost guarantee that it’ll end up to be a superb program.

Does this mean we can use skyp with the iphone? I thought it was only over the internet. Can you also use it on other internet enabled phones?

That is some inspirational stuff… Never know that opinions could be this varied. Thanks for all the enthusiasm to offer such helpful information here.

I must admit that this is one great insight. It surely gives a company the opportunity to get in on the ground floor and really take part in creating something special and tailored to their needs. bikini
