Tethering Hack For iPhone Killed In Firmware 3.1

Today Apple released its highly anticipated Firmware 3.1 update for the iPhone and iPod Touch but raised concerns with some as to whether or not the tethering hack would work any more. After upgrading. I went in to the network menu and tried enabling tethering but noticed the menu item had simply disappeared. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to downgrade or re-enable tethering again. If you have a different experience, let us know in the comments!

  1. Exactly the same experience over here in the UK, to the letter.  Tried a downgrade with the 3.0.1 .ipsw that I wisely kept hold of, and no such luck.  I’m guessing a signed carrier profile might magically return the tethering option (otherwise there are going to be a lot of angry O2 customers over here who are paying £15-£30/mo. for tethering).

  2. I upgraded today and tethering still works in the US.

  3. RT, really? I’ve been holding off b/c I hear the tethering is gone here in the US too…

  4. I updated to 3.1 today.  Big mistake!  Not only did I lose my apps but tethering as well… Damn you Apple!

  5. I lost tethering aswell. I updated my 32gig 3gs and lost tethering. I’m located in Los Angeles, CA. FML!

  7. All gone in Australia on the telstra network also. Gee I am sick of being riped off.

  8. I did the standard tethering hack from BenM only a couple of weeks ago (no MMS, no customization). I upgraded to 3.1 and my tethering remains and still works on my AT&T iPhone 3GS 32GB. I’ve synced multiple times on iTunes 9, but I never power-cycled my device yet.

I’m assuming that the official MMS feature will be sent down through iTunes as a carrier update file, effectively killing my tethering. I’d rather keep it this way for now.

  9. Yeah it totally disabled my tethering.  What a bummer.  

  10. It’s also erased some of my contacts.  Wth?

  11. On O2 £35/pcm ... Upgraded to 3.1 this morning and lost “unofficial” tethering :-(

  12. I upgraded my 32gb 3gs and I still have the tethering option.  I’m located in LA.

  13. I lost tethering. When I installed the tethering hack a few weeks ago, I was unable to get voice messages any longer.

  14. I have a 32GB 3GS, which I bought on launch day and immediately put on the tethering hack. I upgraded yesterday and it is still there.

However, I have a question for all of you - did it mess up any of your playlists? I have a smart playlist called “Podcasts”, which I use at work and in the car because it will go from one podcast to the next without stopping. And I have one other smart playlist where I put books that I ripped from CD (not downloaded Audiobooks). In any case, the songs in both of those playlists are all out of order. They are sorted correctly in iTunes and I made sure the play order was copied. This all happened the moment I downloaded iTunes 9 and the OS 3.1 firmware. I have tried restoring my iPhone, but I cannot go back to OS 3.0.

Any ideas what could fix this?

  15. Interesting that the update seems to be affecting some people differently than others. Where there multiple ways to get the tethering hack?

Posted by MacBones on September 10, 2009 11:28 AM
  16. I did the upgrade lost Tethering but was able to keep MMS, tried to downgrade to 3.0 but Apple has killed that also, restored a couple of times trying every trick on the net and now not only do I not have Tethering but no more camera Icon, MMS gone completely. I guess we will have to wait for 3.1 jailbreak to use pdanet again. For now we will just have to hate life.

  17. Tethering is still working for me on at&t.

  18. for those of you that tethering is still working…how did you get tethering to work in the first place?

Posted by MacBones on September 10, 2009 2:52 PM
  19. really wish some people would start giving the details on HOW they got the tethering hack and whether they did the hack before or after they did the 3.1 upgrade.

  20. Upgraded fine, tethering works… but I can’t download torrents over it now… Im in Canada with a 32gb 3G S.

  21. Same here in Australia. Tethering option is gone!

  22. btw I still using 3G one.

  23. I upgraded, expecting to lose tethering.  I wasn’t disappointed smile. The unexpected bonus for me was that all of my music on my 16gb 3G was deauthorized to the registered iTunes library.  Had to reauthorize the phone to the lib and reload my music.  I’ve been working in the software and technology worlds for so long now, I fully expect a couple of problems.

  24. I did my upgrade last night and tethering is still on/working! I guess I’m one of the lucky ones. 32GB iPhone 3GS. I see a trend here - are other 32GB users managing to keep tethering while 16GB iPhones lose it?

Posted by MacBones on September 11, 2009 8:23 AM
  25. Same here, I install 3.1 and my tethering just vanish before my eyes. Darnet.

  28. I already own a fantastic laptop (Dell M1730) but am unable to take it everywhere because it has a low battery life and is rather heavy when placed in a backpack along with several textbooks. Are there any good reaons/uses why I should get an Iphone 3g?

  30. I love people who curse out Apple for putting out new software updates that kill their unauthorized hacks. Honestly, think about what you type before you hit the submit button. You are making yourselves sound very unintelligent.

  31. 32GB iPhone 3GS - upgraded from OS 3.0 to 3.1 and lost my tethering:(
However, if I go to Settings -> General -> Usage - now it shows Tethering Data:) makes me hope that when we get MMS from AT&T on Sept. 25th, maybe they will reveal when tethering is coming out:) or maybe they will release tethering same day:) I hope:) but for now - no tethering:( Good bye Hulu for now:(

  33. Apple may have made the update, but it’s ATT who is ripping folks off. I’m leaving ATT when their agreement expires in 2010 Apple.

  34. Hello!

iPhone OS 3.1 is available as a free download for iPhone users and also iPod touch users who are already running iPhone OS 3.0. iPod touch users running earlier firmware versions can upgrade to iPhone OS 3.1 for $4.95..

            Thanks in advance!

  38. IBM tried to make their computers to run only their authorized software. If they had not lost control of the PC standard we’d all be using only official IBM software. Apple came out in 1984 with that kick ass commercial and now 25 years later they are doing the same thing to their users that IBM tried; locking a multiuse computer (iphone/ipod) so it only runs their software. They are mirroring IBM’s heavy handed attempt at draconian control.

People jailbreak because Apple is not being attentive to the market, and is completely anal about control, and is TOTALLY the opposite of what they represent themselves to be.

I bought a 3gs, was not told that logging onto itunes to register would update my phone so now I can’t jailbreak till a new pwn is released. AND I WILL JAILBREAK the phone.

What they are doing is the same as if Ford made this kick ass car, but you could only drive on Ford made or approved roads, using only Ford made or approved gasoline. And when Apple does finally come out with a feature that has been around since G-d made dirt (for example cut-n-paste) the fanbois all suck air and applaud. I bought the iphone so I could have a great phone/computer that I could load the software of my choice on.

If I mod my car I break the warranty. I am willing to do that. So too I want to mod my phone and don’t care about the warranty, not will I cry to apple that it’s broken. I’ll buy another.

So fanbois stop bitchen and supporting apple that just wants you to bend over.

  39. 32gig 3G, I installed the tethering hack at help.benM.at/ (no MMS) had visual voice mail issues and corrected them at help.benM.at/, all worked great.  Then I upgrade to 3.1 and lost the menu for tethering.  Friend still has menu on 16gb 3GS.  Weird some have lost it and some still have it.  I heard it was a profile issue….

Posted by Stephen on September 17, 2009 2:31 PM
  40. Uninstall the profile used to enable tethering and you will notice that the “Set Up Internet Tethering” button re-appears under “Network”. Obviously this doesn’t solve the problem but I’d say the tethering feature is enabled/disable with the absence/presence of an installed profile, which sets the APN property. Looks like we may need an alternate hack…
