Texas university giving iPhones to all freshmen
It’s not uncommon for educational institutions to hand out Apple computers to incoming students and faculty, but this is a truly unprecedented events. The Abilene Christian University in Texas is handing out iPhones and iPod Touches to all incoming freshman as part of a new integrative-technology program. Supposedly, students will be able to access information about homework alerts, in-class surveys, directions to classrooms and offices, and meal balance information- all from the convenience of their iPhones. Is the iPhone the only device that can perform these functions? Absolutely not. We’re all for technology being used by as many people as possible, but has the ACU ever heard of traditional schedules, written with (gasp!) pencil and paper? Maybe we’re old fashioned, but this just seems like overkill to us.

Interesting and I’m jealous too! I don’t think it’s overkill. Yeah, iPhone is an expensive device to do this with but at least it’s easy to obtain and get support for…plus the university will be able to design and build their own (web) applications in house. By running them on local servers and providing campus-wide WiFi, the experience could be super slick and super consistent. I wish them every luck with it and wish I was working on it too!
