The iPhone Killer Will Be The iPhone

image As I type this bold claim I assure you that I type this extra special post on my iPhone, not an LG Prada or that iPhone knockoff Nokia announced so proudly. I however am not so blinded by fanboyism and the radiation of RDF instilled with some iPhone users to realize that Apple is jeopardizing the iPhone.

The first public mention made of the iPhone was roughly 9 months ago. That is plenty of time for any cellular company to concoct a iPhone killer. Here is the thing, only one variant of iPhone has been sold, the 1st generation model sporting a rather weak but spacious for a cell phone 4 and 8 GB flavors.

9 months is a ton of time in the Cellular world and Apple is taking its sweet time upgrading the line. They’re pulling the same strategy that launched the iPod to fame but that planning was meant for a developing market where the only customers were those wanting to indulge on MP3 players. This thinking is fatal when applied to cell phones as the industry is constantly changing, to be honest I am surprised that Apple has not introduced at least an iPhone Nano along side the current line up.

We’ve seen it done with Nokia, even though it is a knock off in some regards but when it comes down to it these are all evolutionary changes. Apple is in the mentality that AT&T is the entire cellular market, this thinking will kill the iPhone and basically builds up Apple’s arrogance.

True Apple can deliver the features and status but others can copy it as well at a more affordable price and at the current path Apple is going, the iPhone just might be out-phoned by the likes of Sony, Nokia and Motorola.

  1. Apple is taking it’s time for the introduction of OSX Leopard for iPhone.  Wait until October please.  I don’t doubt the other phone companies Sony, RIM, Nokia, but not Motorola which is a crappy company will have the hardware, but won’t be able to compete with OSX.  Windows Mobile and Symbian OSs are not all that advanced despite how long they’ve been around.  You think that four months of an iPhone in users hands is too long to wait to tweak a really different product that is the first try of a non-cellphone manufacturer.

You really think those companies can just wave a magic wand and instantly build an iPhone killer.  I’ll bet most of those companies got caught way off guard.  If those other companies are so good, then why are they trying to build iPhone killers.  They should just continue on their merry way what they were doing being secure that they’d already taken the right path.

I know you’re just disappointed that they haven’t moved faster, but they’ve really got to be careful not to make any serious mistakes in a world-wide launch.  If it takes a little longer, then so be it.  You’ll see that iPhones will break all sales records over the Christmas holiday and will grab a fat market share in the high model smartphone area.  Be patient for the Leopard feature set of the iPhone.

  2. You’re crazy. What do you mean “We’ve seen it done with Nokia?” Where? In their bad, digitally composited mock-up? That *doesn’t exist yet*. Nothing that comes close to the iPhone’s integration and thoughtfulness does!

It’s only been since June 29th that the phones were released. Early adopters wouldn’t have bought the iPhone nano anyway. Have a little patience. Sheesh.

  3. What’s this “Apple is taking its sweet time upgrading the line.”? Apple’s been working on the iPhone for YEARS! Parts of the software were still being written a couple of weeks before it was released 2 months ago.

And what’s this “9 months is a ton of time”? You seriously think that anyone could put together the hardware, OS, applications and user interface to even just copy the iPhone in 9 months? Nobody has even been able to copy the iPod in years nevermind months!

It’s taken Nokia 9 months just to come up with a no-touch demo . . . probably just an animated video . . .  if they had anthing more than that, they a) would of shown it, and b) would be releasing a touch phone before the end of the year instead of next year sometime.

Apple is NOT “in the mentality that AT&T is the entire cellular market”. Apple is all about user experience, they focus on developing a product that really works. This leads into
    a) the design choices:
    - GSM (wide market penetration)
    - no 3G tech (sucks battery life)
    - Wi-Fi (fast internet connectivity)
    b) Only 2 carriers are GSM in US, and only AT&T would play

  4. Actually the reason they never launched 3g was because they didnt want to pay royalties to qualcomm for the 3g hardware. (Qualcomm has the patent on it) and they had no effiecient solution on their own. Also ATT only wanted to charge 20 a month for unlimited data and they werent giving that much bandwith to a 3g unit for only 20 a month. As far as apple fan boys that to the end defend apple. The iphone should have never been announced or released until the phone was better, not less than or up to par of the other phone on the markets. Its a overpriced and suped up ipod that lacks many normal features of any other phone let alone pda in its class. I can understand updates and all of those wonderful things that people are talking about. I hope Leapord is the day of reckoning, but apple will not give any real answers to any of the wuestions. Even a IM client is still missing. I just dont know and I hate when heresay becomes truth. Actions speak louder than words and the only think apple has done is release a sub par phone and some bug fixes. Thats it nothing more. So all the coulda shoulda wouldas are all bologne until they are here and working.
