U2 Ditch Apple for Blackberry

In news on AppleInsider, U2 has ditched Apple, signing a sponsorship deal of its next world tour with arch enemy Research in Motion, maker of the market leading Blackberry smartphones.

With Bono and Steve Jobs best buds just a few years back, you wonder what has lead to this breakup.

Did someone at Apple screw up in Steve’s absence?

Is U2 philosophically clashing with Apple, such as being unhappy with aspects of Apple’s control over its products?

Is this a reflection of U2’s commercialism, and taking the best deal available? If it is, it is a sad reflection on a band that has always sung of issues, going right back to the early ‘80s and anthems like “Pride” and “Sunday, Bloody Sunday”

Or did Apple become too greedy and arrogant itself, placing unreasonable and unworkable demands on U2?

Whatever the reason, you sense that at some point, money is central to it all.

  1. Its because U2’s album sucks, why bring apple down too.  U2 is no longer relevant.  Bono’s thinks he is bigger than Jesus.  The new album sucks.  thats all…

  2. I’m a great fan of both Apple and U2, and I couldn’t care less what the reason is. They are both large businesses and of course it’s about the money. Apple are not in the habit of spending large amounts on promotions because they don’t have to. Similarly there’s no connection between singing about issues and the right business deal.

  3. “They are both large businesses”

That’s sad isn’t it, when a rock band becomes just a business. So the guys in the band are just like the senior management. They may as well perform on stage in suits and ties if that’s what it’s really come to. RIP Rock ‘n’ roll.

    and nerdnuts: lmao. smile

  4. As notable, perhaps, is that fact that Bono is a co-founder of Elevation Partners, who own 39% of Palm. As Palm readies the Palm Pre for release, another of Elevation’s partners - Roger McNamee - is gaining notoriety for his exaggerated comparisons between the Palm Pre and iPhone (see http://tinyurl.com/dh7fcz).

So: Bono does ads for Apple, invests in Palm, then defects to RIM. What’s next?

  5. Man, I wasn’t paying attention. When did U2 sell their soul?
