Update To Apple iPhone LCD Defect, Apple Care Came Through!

imageThe other day you probably read my recent event with a local Apple store over my iPhone’s defective LCD. Essentially it turned out horrible, I was denied any sort of solution even though my problem was fully acknowledged. That was just my local Apple Store, I decided to call Apple Care and see if I could get some sort of resolution to this. Luckily I did and I am happy to say that Apple Care was just awesome.

If you don’t know what I am talking about, there is a defect in the iPhone’s LCD that displays a grid of white dots across black parts of the screen and the contrast ratio is not normal. After doing some more research it turned out this grids of dots are in fact normal but should not be seen at all. Some said it was the touch sensor grid or just a grid generated by the iPhone’s video chip.

Either way it was still a defect. Oddly enough it was Apple Care that told me to take my iPhone to the Apple store so I could either get it swapped or fixed. When I called today I wasn’t hassled around but was met with very supportive reps. They were indeed aware of this issue and so was Apple’s iPhone engineers but they couldn’t figure out what was wrong with the LCD and why this grid appeared.

Despite this I would be able to get my iPhone’s LCD fixed and had it been within 14 days after I bought it I would’ve been able to get a new one sent out to me. I explained my problem at the Apple Store and both reps were shocked to hear this and they asked exactly which store. Because of this the rep waived the $29 fee for a loaner iPhone however I could not get one as they require your credit card information to make sure you return the iPhone, I didn’t have this information readily available.

I will be receiving a box in a few days to send my iPhone in and it should be back within a week. If you are experiencing this defect I would highly suggest you call Apple Care beforehand to arrange for you to send in your iPhone.

  2. Has anyone noticed that phone replacement is entirely dependant on who you talk to at Apple? There is no protocol that they follow. Some get told no problem and others are left with broken phones. I’ve read that some get new phones after the screen has broken and others are told they have to pay $250 to get it fixed. Any suggestions??

And, I’ll be curious to see what they send you.
