Where Are All The Features/Fixes?

Posted November 15, 2007 9:56 PM by Don Palmigiano

Apple knows how to make people want. They keep the excitement up by releasing very good features very slowly. It seems that aside from a few minor improvements here and there, and the occasional new app, all Apple has been doing with their iPhone firmware updates is stopping hackers. I am getting concerned that this is the only thinking that goes on at Cupertino today, how to stop the next group of hackers. I think that Apple may be putting too much effort into keeping the device closed, and not enough into developing and improving features for it. This would be tolerable if the iPhone did not have so many annoyances; annoyances such as not being able to delete email faster, or not being able to receive MMS and send out multiple messages. All of these need a fix.  All I am asking for are simple fixes at a faster rate, no miracles. Apple can release its new features slowly as they wish, but I wish they would fix the problems faster.

Aside from simple fixes, what features (supported by Apple) would you like on your iPhone? Do you agree with me? Whatever your opinion, please voice it in the comments.

  1. Really what they need is iChat and MMS at the very least.  These are two STANDARD features on any (even medium grade) phone at this point.  I don’t know how many times people have been completely surprised that my “magical” iPhone cannot receive MMS messages or go on AIM.  It’s absolutely ridiculous.

  2. It would be nice to have real added features (wow, now I can reorder my weather.)  I have friends that are still at 1.0.2 because there are no real reasons to upgrade. Their iPhones are hacked with better features then those offered by Apple and it would not be worth the hassle of reloading them for an added music store.

  4. I agree with Andy.  Really they also need to sync to-do’s.  What good is the phone as even a rudimentary PDA if you can’t synch to-do’s??  It’s a freakin HTML file let us do it please!

  6. It seems to me releasing features through ITunes officially would be the best method to discourage most from hacking.  There will always be a small fraction of the population that will hack for the sake of hacking, but I think most that do are for the installer.app and cool little games / utilities.

  7. MMS. Ability to save photos from email to the photo app. Ability to save login/passwords in safari. Ability to force new browser window to open on linking (tabbed browsing would be asking too much). improve the ‘scratch bar slider thing’ so you can jog through iPod content with more precision (the jog wheel on a standard iPod is better than this thing). I could go on and on.

  8. @2. I’ve unlocked my phone a couple of times (1.0.2 and 1.1.1) and I have to say, although I loved the features some of the third party programs provided, they were buggy as hell. Not to mention it always caused my phone to reload SMB at the most inconvienent of times. The IM clients were ‘half’ reliable at best (when they were running) and everything was just ‘slow’.

Although I always loved ‘jailbreaking’ my phone, I’ve come to appreciate the reliability and stability in Apple releases, especially with 1.1.2. I’m amazed at how smooth it runs compared to previous Apple firmwares (let alone unlocked ones).

I’m upset with some of the ‘bugs’ or ‘lack of features’ (all depends who’s complaining), I’m probably not going down the jailbreaking route for a VERY long time, if at all.  I’m probably going to wait around for the official SDK to be released sometime next year before I try anything else again.
