White iPhones Becoming Discolored Due To Faulty Battery?
Users are reporting that their white iPhones are becoming discolored in the back changing the white plastic to a pinkish hue.
The reason for this pinkish hue appearing only on white iPhones seems to be a faulty battery giving off an excess amount of heat. However, some speculate that it may be due to processor intensive tasks causing the CPU and/or GPS chipset to overheat. The later seems more probable as Apple had to down clock the iPhone 3GS’ CPU. However, Aaron Vronko of Rapid Repair (who have disassembled the iPhone 3GS) has his own theory on the problem.
“My guess is there’s going to be a whole lot of batteries affected because these are from very large production runs. If you have a problem in the design of a series of batteries, it’s probably going to be spread to tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, and maybe more.”

This sounds like some low level issue. That said, why isn’t the LiMn battery technology used over LiPo in phones? It’s more durable and will not flare up!

Because simply, the polymer battery can hold many more charges then the LiMn, and there is less cell degredation. The poly’s are unmatched in holding charges and are the best that technology has to offer at this time.

I beg to differ. I use both technologies in my RC heli’s. While the LiPo is a bit lighter in weight, the LiMn takes far more charges and is far far safer. This is why I am converting to LiMn for all my receiver applications. LiPo still has higher discharge rates for motor applications, but the receiver and servos don’t need this level of discharge. In fact, the receivers with servo use way more power than this 3GS iPhone I am using…even with the corrupt software installed.

I reported to the Apple Tech that my phone was getting extremely hot. It is worse when I am using the video application. The Tech had me restore my phone to original settings and then go back and restore all my info. It seemed to help for a while but it is now getting hot again. So the other option is to pay for the $60+ Protection Plan to get a replacement phone. That sucks as I just had to pay $399 for the 16 memory iphone because I was not eligible for an upgrade. I think I should have kept my 3G and waited for the “bugs” to be worked out on the 3Gs.
