Why My iPhone Has Replaced My iPod

imageGreg’s earlier post on how his iPhone has yet to replace his iPod intrigued me for a few reasons so I’d thought I’d add my side to the matter.

I didn’t intend to use the iPod features of the iPhone when I first considered purchasing the device. I already had an 80 GB iPod Video and it sufficed for my needs. However I was lured in by one thing: convergence.

The idea of having a multi function device that could fit in my pocket eventually became very appealing to me. The iPhone Was slimmer than the iPod yet boasted a massive screen compared to that tiny 2.5 inch LCD.

If I had used my iPhone for everything else and my iPod for managing my media library I would have to carry 2 devices with me at all times. I considered this and I realized that carrying just an iPhone, no matter how inferior it was in terms of storage would better suit me.

But then again my needs are different than yours. I never utilized the full capacity of my iPod even when using it to store my entire library. Even then I only watched the latest Podcasts, listened to a few songs here and there and used it for archival purposes.

I have since learned to adapt my needs and since the iPhone is a multi function device I won’t be focusing so much on the iPod features but the Internet and calling. If I am so worried about video and music content then I should’ve rethought my purchase. I don’t have much time to watch 80GBs worth of videos and music so the extra capabilities of the iPwn make up for the lack of storage.

  1. Funny, I bought my iPhone only when I decided the phone wasn’t the most important thing about it. I’ve made a few phone calls on it (like the quick link to the phone from phone numbers on Web sites) but basically I see it as a tool for ubiquitous and untethered computing wherever I can get connectivity.

  2. I have over 7,000 songs in iTunes and love my music.  Yet I have multiple copies of the same songs by different artists, and even different versions by the same artist.  Many of my songs are for “collections” of early blues, Dixieland, Jazz, Zydeco, Heavy metal, punk, etc. and many are mainly archival and listened to less than once a year.

Yet like most people, I (think) there are current favorites, mood music, and all-time favorites that I mostly listen to repeatedly and/or often.  The iphone, through iTunes allows me to easily make playlists and synch to the iPhone.  The one or two thousand I can carry around in an 8Gb iphone are enough for my mobile purposes.

    Different strokes for different folks.

  3. In many ways, my iPhone HAS replaced my iPod - I used to use the iPod every day on the way into work to listen to the radio (with the radio attachment). Now I download all I want to listen to via Podcasts onto my iPhone. I has replaced the device I carry around all the time, into work, and out at night for the car - it will never replace the device I have the majority of my music on (not until the capacity catches up with that of the full grown HD based sibling). So while it has replaced my iPod for day to day use, it has not yet REPLACED my iPod…

  5. I too own an 80GB iPod. It’s over half full. However, it was trivial for me to create a few smart playlists for iPhone synching to get the songs I listen to most (those that are favorites and those that are newest) so I only have to take one device everywhere. It also has a one hour-long TV show on it (rotated from a series) for those times I want to view a video.

The iPhone worked out of the chute with my Alpine car system with iPod controls, which delighted me. It did not work in another car with a Griffin FM transmitter, but it does now that I’ve upgrdaed firmware to 1.0.1.

As for the 80GB iPod, it’s still my “VCR” at home for movies, TV shows, etc., and my main “stereo” plugged into an excellent headphone amp using quality AKG headphones. There is no chance of me eliminating the 80GB unit, it is simply more home-bound (or for long trips) and the iPhone is now the one unit I always carry instead of two. I love it.

  6. My iPhone has replaced my ipod.  Alas, i believe the fate of my 80 gig is to be a backup drive for leopard’s time machine smile
