You’ve Got YouMail!

How many of you love visual voicemail? What about visual voicemail that you have more control over?
YouMail’s free iPhone app is what you might be looking for. YouMail is a subscription- based service that starts at $3.99 a month. The app ties into YouMail’s Web-based service, which allows users to manage their voicemail from a browser. The service in general is pretty cool, allowing you to forward your voicemail to anyone, choose from a variety of status greetings, and transcriptions. YouMail will transcribe your voicemails for you so not only can you hear them, but see them as well; On the computer and the iPhone app.
Voicemail can be saved, recovered and organized within the iPhone application. The iPhone app connects with the desktop version of the application, allowing users to sync messages and block unwanted callers. The iPhone app also allows you to change greetings as well. While using the cool transcription feature, I ran into a few voicemails that were totally off, but by using context clues, I could generally make out the voicemail. Other voicemails were dead-on. I guess it really depends on how one speaks, but overall, I got a good amount of well transcribed voicemails.
The app is very simple but the service is pretty powerful. How much money is it? Not bad if this is something you have been looking for. The basic YouMail app is free and YouMail lets you store 100 voicemails, which is perfect for most people. The transcription services start as low as $3.99/month, which gives you up to 50 transcribed voicemails per month. YouMail transcribes the first 10 seconds of the voicemail, which I thought wouldn’t make much since, but within 10 seconds people pretty much get the point across in that timeframe. There are different plans that range from 9.99/month to $27.99/month which provides unlimited, full-length, high-quality, awesome, voicemail transcriptions.
Overall, the app is good. The real power is the service behind the app. I think there could be more added in the app, such as the ability to incorporate a little more of the community aspect of the web-app. The app does have the most important features which is what they were aiming for and will provide extra features in the future, I am sure. Perhaps push notification which is a welcome feature these days.

It’s a great service. You didn’t mention one of the best features: SmartGreetings. The ‘voicemail lady’ greets callers by name, if the incoming callerID includes it.
Technical support is hit or miss with them though. Best of luck to you if you have a technical question or issue. I’ve been using the service well over a year now, and have emailed a couple times—never receiving a response. I even went as far as purchasing a ‘Pro’ membership, as it promised ‘priority technical support’. Still no response. There isn’t a strong need for technical support, so this may not be an issue for many users.
Your pricing info didn’t mention the ‘Pro’ or ‘Free’ options. With a free account, the web client and text message notifications both contain advertisements. The ‘Pro’ version at either $1.99 monthly or $19.99 annually and gets rid of the ads in the web client and text messages. https://store.youmail.com/store/products/productCategoryView.do?id=400&p_l=5&p_oa1=desc&p_o1=orderCount&sort=orderCount_desc
My biggest gripe about the YouMail iPhone app is that you can’t listen to messages through the earpiece of your iPhone, only over the speaker—with the onboard Visual Voicemail, you have the option of listening over the speaker or privately through the earpiece. If only AT&T’s Visual Voicemail allowed you to forward messages via email, then I wouldn’t miss YouMail so much…

Thanks for adding your experiences! One of your gripes happens to be one of mine as well. I dislike the fact that you cannot listen to voicemails through the earpiece. This app hasn’t been updated in a while so perhaps they are soon to release some with fixes and extra features. Only time will tell…
