What’s the latest on third party apps? I for one simply cannot believe Apple would keep this closed. But, looking at the iPod, who knows!

So far it seems they are keeping it closed.  Coming from a background of never using a smartphone before I can’t say I personally am overly disappointed.  Apple usually covers all the bases and this phone to start has far more functionality and coolness than anything I’ve ever used.  I think Steve probably has a good reason for shying away from them and that being negative effects on the phone such as glitches and crashes, etc.  Maybe they will find a way to incorporate 3rd party widgets that couldnt do major damage to the rest of the phones funtionality. Who knows. Its all speculation at this point

I’m just hoping Apple will end up supporting all 4 major instant messengers (Msn, Yahoo, AOL and Skype) and email from hotmail, gmail, AOL and not just yahoo.

I agree IM would be great. As far as email I’m pretty sure the iPhone will support any account from anywhere with has either IMAP or POP3 enabled.

Only supporting one major instant messenger is one of the things that really hurt the Sony Mylo from really taking off (I’m not really counting skype as an IM as most people really just use it for VOIP and not IM).  I hope Apple will be smarter than Sony and not allow negative feelings towards any other company (yeah I’m thinking Microsoft) to stop them from supporting all the major IMs.

I think that although third party applications may not be supported immediately after the iPhone has been out for a while third party applications will become more common.

I don’t believe Apple would do that to its developers, they invest a lot in them. I’m guessing after its release the option will become available. Or like other phones, it will be hacked.

I read in an article in MacWorld Magazine, that the iPhone will support the full Google suite of web applications, including Google mail, chat and maps.

Apple allowing 3rd party apps in the form of web applications is very disappointing.  Apart from the fact that you have to open safari to get to these 3rd party apps, I really can’t imagine web apps ever being able to take full advantage of the iPhones hardware anywhere as good as apps fully running on the system its self. (I guess we’ll soon find out)

Restricting 3rd party apps to web applications is for the general universe of program writers...to protect the stability and integrity of the system (Notice all the articles about hackers trying to crash the iPhone?).

Apple will allow some native applications from strictly controlled developers for core applications...just not allow anyone and everyone to do so.  It’s the best for the iPhones stability, success and in the interest of the public using iPhones.  Watch and see.  The (continuing) development of the iPhone will unfold for years...that’s the way Apple does it...constant, but controlled, improvement.

I’m sure your right....but I can’t say i like that route at all....I prefer the Windows Mobile/pocket pc, Palm OS route, where I know I’ll be able to get a program that does exactly what I want no matter what.  If a program is not stable just uninstall it and move on.  This route Apple has gone with isn’t a deal breaker, but it is a downer.
