iPhone in Dentistry

Our company, Planet DDS, Inc. (http://www.planetdds.com), offers a web-based (SaaS) practice management software application to dental practices. The application manages all business and clinical data (the equivalent of an electronic medical record) for a dental practice.

Recently, we created a secure interface from our application to the iPhone. So, via the iPhone, a dentist can access patient records, health and treatment histories, radiographs, prescriptions, appointment schedules, office reports, etc.

Interestingly, the application was developed by one of our engineers on his own initiative, because he thought it would be cool. The resulting interest from dentists has shown that they, too, think it’s cool. Because of the iPhone interface, our lead generation increased almost 25% in the last two weeks.

Beyond the fact that our application now gives a dentist the excuse that he or she was looking for to buy an iPhone, there is valid interest that the quality of treatment will improve, especially in the case of dealing with emergencies over the phone – a situation all dentists dread, especially since it often involves prescribing medication without adequate information.

We see the iPhone, utilizing applications like ours, becoming a standard practice tool for dentists. Any thoughts?
