There needs to be a capability to set your iPhone to some silent mode that will still inform you when a call is coming in.  I have my Motorola phone set to vibrate, then starting ringing...low volume to higher volume.  I’m still very concerned about the basic cell phone functionality of the iPhone, and look forward to hearing more from Apple.

I agree 100 percent! I find it very very hard to believe that Apple won’t include this functionality. It is crucial for when one is in meetings, or at the movies, etc. I simply cannot believe that Apple would not have a vibrating functionality, or something similar....who knows, maybe Apple has something up their sleeves for another way to silently indicate? Maybe the the iPhone starts burning up!

It does have a silent mode button on the outside top left - it works to mute the phone from ringing incoming calls and email, but will permit the alarm clock setting to make an audible alert - I use my iPhone as my travel alarm clock but do not like to be woken up if I am not on call for any reason, so I can mute the calls but still hear the alarms.
