i have to say im pretty happy about the pricing structure announced today. I’m a current at&t customer, so for me looking at the data plans, 20 for unlimited access seems fair. still the big question mark is speed. so here is my situation:
i live in the boston metro area for most of the year. so i imagine they have pretty solid edge coverage everywhere i am. on the other hand, i’m a poor, poor college student. $600 dollars is already gonna hit me relatively hard (unless i win an iphone from iphonematters.com! wink ) and an extra 240 a year on top doesnt sound like a fun time. i also go to school on a campus that i primarily covered in wifi, which is near alot of other school, which will also presumably be covered in some kind of wifi. i have wifi in my apartment, as do the majority of people i know.

so is the data even worth it?

as far as my talk with a customer service rep today can tell, we might have the chance to try before we commit. the 20 dollar a month tacked on data charge seems to be a monthly thing and not a commitment you make at the beginning of your contract, meaning you could add or drop it at any time. this remains to be seen, and im not sure how this works with new customer, but it might be worth thinking about before committing to the data plan for 2 years. as far as i can tell there is no price premium to tacking it on as opposed to agreeing up front

I’m pretty sure you’ll have to commit to the 2-year contract for the data plan, and will not be able to avoid the extra $20/month fee.
