I purchased a hard-shell plastic case off ebay for my Iphone.
This particular model has a dragon shape image on the back,
a square cut out in the middle of the back within the dragon
image, and it snaps together to provide very good protection.

However, it was not able to fit into the plastic recharging dock
after that, you could plug into the phone, with the usb connect
cable, but to use the plastic recharging dock required removing
the hard shell plastic case. I decided that I could just use the
cable, and not use the plastic recharging doc. This was OK, until
I started noticing two things. The proximity detector which turns
off the screen when you bring the iphone up to your face
no longer worked, and the camera would not take a picture in dark
settings. When you held the phone up to your ear, different tones
came from the keypad being touched by you ear or cheek, very
annoying. When you snapped the shot, it would jump you back to
the home screen, and no picture was captured.

Once I took off the plastic case, I found that the proximity
detector functionality returned, and I had no more problems
with the camera. The slot for the speaker must interfere with
the proximity detector. The case must also cut light off to
the camera, although there is quite a bit of room around the
circular cutout to see the lens.

This is just a warning!

If you encounter these symptoms, and if you are using a hard
shell plastic case, it may be caused by the case!

Caveat Emptor!

Let me know, if anyone else has run into these symptoms, and
we will get the word out as a general warning!
