AT&T Bringing 7.2 Mbps 3G To Six Major Cities

Categories: AT&T Hardware News

image One of the biggest gripes iPhone users have had is the network powering the device: AT&T. Complaints have ranged from a slow network to having a weak signal when competitors have better coverage in that area. To ease concerns, AT&T has been upgrading its network behind the scenes and now the carrier is bringing HSPA 7.2 support to six major cities.

Almost all of AT&T’s cell sites run at a slower 3G speed despite some of the carrier’s phones having support for faster 3G standards (HSDPA) such as the iPhone. One of Apple’s marketing points for the iPhone 3GS was its enhanced speed not only in CPU clock but also in its network connection and runs at the newer 7.2 Mbps 3G standard despite AT&T not supporting those speeds yet. Thankfully, AT&T is bringing support for its faster 3G standard to six cities: Charlotte, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles and Miami. AT&T is enthusiastic about its network upgrade.

“Our deployment of HSPA 7.2 and supporting backhaul connectivity will enable our customers to continue to ride the leading edge of emerging devices and thousands of mobile applications, our… more...

Today Apple released its highly anticipated Firmware 3.1 update for the iPhone and iPod Touch but raised concerns with some as to whether or not the tethering hack would work any more. After upgrading. I went in to the network menu and tried enabling tethering but noticed the menu item had simply disappeared. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to downgrade or re-enable tethering again. If you have a different experience, let us know in the comments!

NotifyMe for iPhone Reviewed

I love applications that take advantage of Apple’s push notification feature. I am constantly receiving notices on my iPhone that remind me of everything. One of the applications is called NotifyMe.

NotifyMe is a simple application that uses Apple’s push notification service to notify you of reminders set within the app. Reminders can be set for any time and assigned a category. You can also have reminders recur daily, weekly, biweekly, monthly, and yearly.

What I love about NotifyMe is the fact that is has a very simple, well designed interface that lets you quickly get to setting a reminder.

From the main screen you can add a reminder and see upcoming, passed, and recent reminders. It is very simple.

Most of my reminders came in right on the specified time. Unlike many of the reminder sounds from some of the applications I’ve tested, NotifyMe is rather loud and although annoying, it is also a good thing to keep me in check. I just wish you could choose from different notification tones.

I really like how the app is customizable as well. You can set the app… more...

Apple Approves then Removes Manomio’s C64 Emulator

imageIn another game of cat and mouse, Apple has subjected Manomio’s C64 emulator to a strenuous review process. However, it was finally approved, which brought a glimmer of hope that Apple would be reforming its App Store review policies; but alas, it was null and void as the App was promptly removed.

Manomio’s C64 App was first denied in June of this year due to its ability to execute run time code (it is a Commodore emulator after all) which is expressibly forbidden according to the iPhone SDK 2.0 agreement. However, once Manomio stripped out access to the BASIC interpretor from the App, it gained access in to the App Store only to be cut out again. The reason? While BASIC was removed originally, it was hidden within the App and could be accessed with a simple shortcut. The shortcut to enable BASIC within the emulator is simple according to the The iPhone Blog:

(If you’re dying to get your BASIC on, however, reader Stooovie let us know you can still access it by enabling “always show full keyboard”, starting a game, paging over to the EXTRA keyboard, and then… more...

AT&T Bringing MMS To iPhones September 25th, Tethering Later

image AT&T has finally made good on its promise to enable MMS for the iPhone although a few days late of Summer’s end. However, the carrier didn’t give an official date on when it would bring tethering support to the iPhone although both features can be enabled relatively easily without AT&T’s intervention.

When Apple demonstrated Firmware 3.0 for the iPhone, it promised MMS and Internet tethering to the iPhone and that a massive amount of carriers worldwide would support the new features. However, AT&T wasn’t amongst that list and remained mum about the subject for quite a while. After promising a late summer roll out, it’s finally enabling the feature in about 3 weeks, a few days after Summer’s official end. MMS support will arrive in the form of a Software update in the much awaited 3.1 update alongside augmented reality support.

AT&T pushed out a press release detailing its roll out of MMS to the iPhone and that the carrier has been working on a strong network versus enabling the feature right of the bat:

We know that iPhone users will embrace MMS. The unique capabilities and high usage… more...

TomTom iPhone App Reviewed

TomTom is one of the worlds largest GPS hardware and software maker, so it makes since that a lot of people were anxiously awaiting the TomTom GPS app for the iPhone.

I managed to get my hands on this iPhone app and I absolutely love it!

The app only works on the iPhone 3G and 3GS and require the 3.0 iPhone firmware. This application features landscape views, 3D and 2D views, night and day views, and a plethora of points of interests.

Since the app does not use an internet connection to collect maps, the application installs all data onto your iPhone at a whopping 1.25GBs of US and Canada maps so make sure you have plenty of space.

Since it is so large, the download and install process is rather long, but once installed, I simply launched the app and was welcome with a list of options. The app is surprisingly fast and smooth considering the level of detail. The connection was also pretty fast and I was connect in less than 7 seconds.

You can tap routes and draw your own waypoints, and also find restaurants, call to… more...

Apple Bans uTorrent Monitoring App

Posted September 3, 09 4:00 AM by Tanner Godarzi

imageApple has banned another App from entering its App Store. The App in question, uMonitor, allows users to check the status of their Torrent downloads on their computer. However, the App does not allow users to download Torrents on to their phone.

The App was denied after sitting in review limbo for well over four months which is far beyond the normal time frame Apps are usually approved but then again, this App touches a sensitive subject in the tech community: Torrenting. While using the protocol itself isn’t considered illegal, the fact that it has become synonymous with downloading pirated media usually causes concerns. However, Apple assumes you will use the App to abuse a third party’s rights while in reality, it just monitors your current downloads.

A quote from Apple reveals that the Cupertino based company believes that whoever downloads this App would automatically use it to download media that would otherwise require being bought and to infringe on third party rights:

“We’ve reviewed µMonitor and determined that we cannot post this version of your application to the App Store at this time because this category of applications is often used… more...

New App for iPhone Shows Disease Outbreak Maps Wherever You Are

John Brownstein of Children’s Hospital Boston and Clark Freifeld of MIT’s Media Lab have created a new app that allows anyone to see up-to-date, graphic representations of outbreaks in their neighborhoods, cities, states, and countries. No matter where you go, Healthmap will show you the state of such epidemics as H1N1. It is an ingenious application that should grace the iPhone of every parent, doctor, and hypochondriac.

“People have their cell phones with them at all times, and especially in other parts of the world, cell phones are much more used than PCs,” Brownstein said. “Cell phones represent an extraordinary tool to provide location-based service. You can search for restaurants near you. Why not understand what is happening around you in public health?”

One of the coolest things about this app is that it has the potential to allow individuals to assess outbreaks where they are, and give feedback about what they witness in any given spot. In other words, Healthmap will be updated from feedback by its users, or ground troops if you will. This could help all of us by speeding up information… more...
