I Just Sold My iPhone! What About You?

Posted June 3, 08 6:25 PM by Don Palmigiano

imageWell, it is June a again. The new iPhone is just around the corner. To get ready for the new 3G arrival I have dropped the ball and chain. That is I have sold my old iPhone. Within an hour of posting an ad to craigslist I had an offer. My buyer wants to pay $400 for my used iPhone. Why the high offer? It maybe because it was the first iPhone sold in California. It maybe because iPhones are hard to find. It may be any number of reasons. All I know is that I am ecstatic. The feelings and excitement of last year are coming back. I am free to feel excited, as I now have the revenue to support the 2nd generation iPhone. I will miss my iPhone, it served me well.

How about you? Will you be selling your current phone to support your wallet? When do you think is the opportune time, before demand for the 1st generation phone goes down?

When Apple announced last year that am iPhone SDK was indeed on its way, it got iPhone users and developers excited anticipating the February delivery date. The state of cell phones and handheld devices varies from country to country for either good or for worse. Realizing that even though the iPhone is put on a pedestal here in the US, the sales numbers haven’t told us the same thing in Europe.

We’re asking our non US readers to send in the names and a bit of info of the most popular phones in their region that compete directly with the iPhone in media capabilities and the user interface.

We’ll profile these in a separate post. Sound off in the comments.

Are iPhone Users Ready for Another Model?

Posted January 28, 08 7:00 AM by Gregory Ng

Mike Elgan of Computerworld is predicting a new iPhone this summer. Elgan cites the amazing but less than expected iPhone sales numbers released by Apple as one of the reasons why iPhone 2.0 is inevitable this summer or fall at the latest.

“The only way Apple could possibly feel “confident” of reaching 10 million units by the end of 2008 is if the company were to sell more iPhones during next year’s holiday season than it did during the 2007 season. And the only way to do that is to sell to existing users. And the only way to do that is to come out with a new iPhone.”

This may very well be the strategy that Apple is planning. But are iPhone users ready to pony up for a new model? Despite the current gripes by existing iPhone owners for the lack of 3G, true GPS, software flexibility, and Outlook support, will those same people be prepared to pay for another iPhone only half way through their 2-year contract?

For me, a new iPhone with all of the above additions is a… more...

How Many More Firmware Updates Until We Get Copy/Paste?

Posted January 16, 08 11:09 PM by Don Palmigiano

Whoops. Looks like I forgot about copy/paste again. Apple had me so excited with the new features, I forgot about the basics. Greg reminded me with his previous post on what he didn’t like about the new firmware update. As much as I do love the new features on my phone, I am a bit upset about not having the basics. Why does Apple blind the average consumer with so many unnecessary, but awesome, features. Yet another update comes along, bringing with it many exciting features. Only one question remains. How many firmware updates must we install before we get copy/paste? What do you guys think? My guess is that at least one more will come out before we finally get the update we have been waiting for.

So my answer to Greg’s question is… no. After further reflection I realized that I was not satisfied with this update. Though I do not think 1.1.3 was a bad update, it could have had more features. So Apple, either release your updates more often or have better quality.

What’s Your iPhone New Year’s Resolution?

Posted January 2, 08 7:00 AM by Gregory Ng
Categories: Poll

imageIt’s a brand new year and with that comes New Year’s resolutions. It is a time to wipe the slate clean and to start fresh. Some people decide to work out more, eat less, stop smoking, etc. But are there any resolutions that you are making for your iPhone?

Here’s my short list of iPhone related New Year’s resolutions.

- I will try to get an image associated with every phone book entry in my iPhone. Gone will be my gray silhouettes in places where pictures should be.
- I will do more web browsing on my iPhone. Forget my MacBook, I have the power of the internet in my hand.
- I will eliminate my dependency on my iPod Video by the end of the year. It’s time to watch more movies on a widescreen.

All of my resolutions are attainable. I have 366 days to get it done. It is a leap year after all.

What are some of your iPhone resolutions?

Should Apple and AT&T Both Be Responsible in Lawsuit?

Posted December 6, 07 7:00 AM by Gregory Ng
Categories: Poll

Apple and AT&T have been smacked with a patent infringement lawsuit from a company claiming to own intellectual rights to the visual voicemail idea. Apparently, this great feature on the iPhone that allows users to listen and control email out of sequence is such a good idea that it was already thought of before. This technology was created by Klausner Technologies and they want moolah in the amount of an estimated $360 million.

“The lawsuit, filed Dec. 3, also names Comcast, Cablevision Systems and eBay’s Skype for patent infringement on the same technology.”

I obviously do not know all the facts but based on Apple’s arrogant behavior towards intellectual rights (namely the name “iPhone") I tend to assume Apple is in the wrong. Or is it AT&T’s fault?

Apple has been brought into the lawsuit as the designer of the iPhone. But AT&T is named as well for selling the darn things. It is not published who came up with the idea as it pertains to the iPhone. Was it Apple’s idea and AT&T simply enabled the technology from happening? In other words, had Apple chosen Verizon, would Verizon… more...
