Find All New Apps, Updates, and Price Changes

Posted October 6, 08 11:00 AM by Jovan Washington

I don’t know about you all, but I completely detest the fact Apple got rid of the “All iPhone Apps” link within iTunes. I did happen to stumble upon a very great site that will not only ease my frustration, but yours as well.

Meet AppShopper.com. This new site tracks updates, price changes, and all other apps that are entered in the App Store.

The main page gives you an instant view of all updated apps, beginning with the newest or most recent.

The site also breaks it down a bit further and allows you to search categories such as: New, Prices, New Free Apps, and New Games.

One thing missing - the option to search for an app. I’m not quite sure how this was missed, but at least the main functions of the site are there.

This site is quite useful and I hit myself over the head for not thinking about this myself!

Apple Drops iPhone NDA

“We put the NDA in place because the iPhone OS includes many Apple inventions and innovations that we would like to protect, so that others don’t steal our work. It has happened before,”

That is a statement off of the iPhone developer website. Apple has received a lot of criticism for a while now about this policy and Apple has agreed to do away with this for released software.

However, they aren’t completely getting rid of it of course. They are due to send out a revised agreement covering just released software.

Apple went on to acknowledge that the iPhone NDA “has created too much of a burden on developers, authors and others interested in helping further the iPhone’s success, so we are dropping it for released software.”

Apple should have a new agreement by the end of the month that developers will need to sign again.

Can You Deal With an iPhone Without 3G and WiFi?

Posted September 26, 08 3:00 PM by Jovan Washington

3G I can do without, seeing as how it is not yet offered in my area. However, I am not so sure I could stand the iPhone without WiFi. That is what China is doing.

Customers looking to purchase a iPhone 3G in China will soon be able to do so - Just a little catch though, minus the 3G and WiFi.

China Mobile does not have a 3G network so I understand them asking Apple to disable 3G but going a step further asking to disabling WiFi as well? That perplexes me.

That leaves all of the owners of the iPhone 3G with just a 2G data connection. Not cool.

Then I did some more thinking, how could they exclude these features from the iPhone? Then I realized through software, so there is still hope for hackers to unlock WiFi, which I am pretty sure will be done.

Does anyone know why China would disable WiFi?

2.2 Beta Seeded to Select Developers

Following on the 8 betas for 2.0 (released July 11), and 4 for 2.1 (released September 12), 2.2 will hopefully bring us a Push Notification.

The new version is labeled iPhone OS 2.2 beta 1 and is accompanied by a new beta of the iPhone SDK (build 9M2611). Beyond “compatibility testing”, there are no other differences noted by Apple.

I am starting to think we aren’t going to see the update in September, as promised, but who knows. There are still a couple of days left…

Apple recalls iPhone USB power adapter

imageYou love everything about your 3G iPhone don’t you? You love the shiny non metal back, the superior browsing speed, the call clarity, the GPS that isn’t all that GPSish, the minimal packaging, the cord to plug the iPhone into a USB port, and the USB power adapter. One of these things is actually pure evil. Don’t touch it. All the safe stuff about the iPhone take one step forward. Not so fast USB power adapter.

What’s wrong with the USB power adapter? Well, besides the fact that it is made up of pure evil as mentioned above? Turns out, according to Apple, that under “certain conditions” the metal prongs can break off and remain in the power outlet. This happened to me and it wasn’t that big of a deal until I tried to use a fork to get them out. Anyway, according Apple this creates a potential shock hazard (or as we call it in the biz: involuntary electron flow incident) and they want them back. Apple claims it isn’t a big problem, that it has only been reported by a small number of users and hasn’t caused any injuries… more...

Podcaster rejected, trouble brews

imageApple has rejected for inclusion in the App store and this time it isn’t something as silly as Pull My Finger. The rejected application this time has actual functionality and is called PodCaster. PodCaster, as the name implies, is a program designed to give you some more control over podcasts. And that is where the trouble started. Apple rejected PodCaster because:

...Podcaster assists in the distribution of podcasts, it duplicates the functionality of the Podcast section of iTunes.

Except that Podcaster had more functionality than what Apple built in. See, with iTunes you have to plug your iPhone into the computer to load up your podcasts with Podcaster you can do it all over Wi-Fi. But wait there’s more. It isn’t as if you can’t already find scads of redundant Apps in the App store. Every calculator is redundant, every clock, every weather application and so on. Clearly redundancy hasn’t been a big sticking point before.

As you might imagine there is plenty of outrage to go around. Developers are vowing to stop developing, and pundits are… more...

IPhone world’s fastest growing device

Posted September 10, 08 9:07 AM by Chris Seibold

imageAccording to AdMob the iPhone is the world’s fastest growing device. Apparently they measure this by number of requests from the iPhone on the internet (measuring this is easy to do, but also easy to spoof). More interesting than the iPhone is some other stats found in the article. Smart phones accounted for 25.8% of worldwide traffic (hard to believe), and that the iPhone in conjunction with the other top five smart phones accounted for 12.9% of all US traffic (call me skeptical).

One supposes it is in AdMob’s interest to pump the numbers up to eleven for mobile browsing since the company is devoted to monetizing mobile advertising so the stats aren’t too surprising. And if they did reach the numbers with some wonky math just think of it as a glimpse into the future.

Your iPhone and targeted advertising

Posted September 3, 08 10:37 AM by Chris Seibold
Categories: Advertising News

iPhone owners are a coveted market. Usually youngish and stocked with disposable cash they are the people every advertiser except the makers of Oops! I Crapped my Pants want to reach. If companies want to reach the iPhone enabled out there then the companies that sell ads want to give those advertisers a way to get their ads in front of iPhone users.

Predictably companies are optimizing ads for the iPhone. one of the first out of the gate? AOL. Platform-A will detect if you’re using an iphone and then serve you up so delicious iPhone only advertising. But AOL isn’t going to stop there, the optimized ads will then (hopefully only if you want to go) redirect your iPhone to sites specifically coded for the iPhone by the marketers.

It all sounds innocuous enough but when I’m using my iPhone I want regular version of the pages, not iPhone specific pages (I’m looking at you Amazon). It is easy to imagine this kind of thing getting out of hand and ruining the web for the iPhone. I haven’t tested it yet but I bet you can get the same experience on your Mac by… more...

iPhone in China soon?

Posted September 2, 08 2:11 PM by Chris Seibold
Categories: Business News Marketing Rumor

If you want to get your hands on an iPhone and you live in China you can either get a job building the things or pay top dollar for an unlocked iPhone. AFP reports that that is about to change. Sources tell AFP that Apple is in the final stages of talks with China’s largest telecom provider China Mobile. According to AFP the holdup was over Apple’s revenue sharing demands. Apple wants a big slice of the iPhone pie? Is such a thing even possible?

China has a population of 1.3 billion and 608 million current cell phone users,so the opportunity is huge. If Apple can make the iPhone cool in China expect big sales and the goal of 10 million iPhones sold in 2008 to seem quaint.
